"United Shades of America" host W. Kamau Bell speaks candidly with farmer Scott Blubaugh of Tonkawa, Oklahoma, who describes how Covid-19 has put a glaring spotlight on what's wrong with the way our country handles food production and distribution.
Jenny is so proud of herself! Her training is coming along, a little bit at a time.
Our sheep Peggy (aka Little Bit) got on a Zoom call with some other grassfed cuties... support your local farms!
"Hey Peggy, there's some cud chewing noise. Can you mute yourself?"
We couldn't resist 😊 but in all seriousness, want to send a smile, thank you, and "hang in there" to ALL of our regional farmers (not just the one's whose animals got on our 'Benefits of Going Grassfed' #Zoom call) for their hard work #stillfarming through this pandemic. Many have had to learn new digital platforms and quickly build new packing and distribution systems in order to pivot to direct sales. And that's on top of the already busy nature of Spring.
Now is a perfect time to invest your grocery dollars into your local food community. To find a farmer near you, or get listed, visit the Find-A-Farmer Or Market Map on our website.

Jenny’s getting some work in with the yearlings. Her second time working!
Moving ewes and lambs to new pasture. Arlo is such a good helper. We also separated the yearling ewes out so that the pups can start practicing! Good time for it...
Life is uncertain and scary right now. Here on the farm, daffodils are blooming, grass is growing, and lambs and kids are getting bigger and stronger every day. We feel so fortunate to be able to take comfort in the familiar seasonal rhythms, enjoy a cuddle with our favorite ewe amid the birdsong and scudding clouds, and savor our daily chores of feeding, watering, collecting eggs and moving sheep. We'll keep doing what we're doing, and so will many, many other local farms, because the demands of the season don't stop, even for a national health crisis.
If you are able, please support your local farms and other small local businesses - they need all the help they can get right now. We hope you are all staying safe and well with your families, finding new ways to connect with the world, and considering food grown close to home, with love and care.

When was the last time you ate lamb? Did you know that it’s one of the most popular meats in England, Australia, Greece and the Middle East? In the United States we eat a paltry annual aver…
We are all impacted. We are all able to make change.
Perdue, Vilsack and leading agricultural groups gathered in a Maryland barn to talk about the farm-country issue that dare not speak its name.
The secret to richer, carbon-capturing soil? Treat your microbes well
We don’t have to understand every detail of the amazingly complex soil microbiome. We just have to feed it right, and it might work wonders.

A reminder to never give up, despite the obstacles.
Future Harvest - The Chesapeake Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture
In partnership with the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), Future Harvest is conducting an on-farm soil health benchmark study on Maryland farms. Using an array of physical, biological, and chemical attributes, combined with farmer's management records, this long-term research initiative aims to help farmers determine whether their soil health management practices are achieving the desired results. Pretty cool, eh? Participating farms receive:
· Free soil testing and report from Cornell Soil Health Testing Laboratory, a value of $340 per year, for at least three years;
· A soil health benchmark report, detailing soil health indicators from each field, including anonymous comparisons to peer farms;
· Opportunities to discuss and interpret soil test results with your peer group, through events and workshops.
All of our spots are filled for 2019, but we'd like to increase the number of participating farms significantly for next year, so be sure to come learn more about this and other exciting new soil health initiatives at our 2020 Conference: Farming for Our Soils, Livelihood, and Community!
