Beall Spring Raquel on her second time in the 2’6”

Did you see the fun #barbiegirlchallenge reel we posted last night on Instagram? Those quick clips showed a cute #glowup of Tatum and Stormy, but we wanted to share the full videos of their transformation together. The first video is them 1 year ago, and then it cuts to now.

Stormy is thriving in our professional training program, receiving multiple training rides each week. He’s learning a ton, which helps Tatum progress in her lessons. A confident pony + a confident rider = a happy team.

One year ago today, we had to close the barn, as Maryland went on lock down, and Covid restrictions prevented us from having anyone on the property. It was such a trying time. We missed having busy aisles and laughter. We know our clients missed their horses. It was tough for everyone.

We were able to reopen and maintain some normalcy for our riders, and we are very grateful for that. What a crazy year it’s been.

For now, we are glad to be as back to normal as possible for a pandemic, and to be horse showing regularly.

Continuing with Women’s History Month...

We asked our riders to think about the female equestrians that inspired them. We loved this response:

“One of the girls I’m inspired by the most is Josephine. She is a big jumper, and I want to be just like her when I’m a teenager.” -Tatum

Josephine has been riding since she was five years old, and has spent the last seven years riding with @alexandrajdo. Her goals are to ride in the Grand Prix before she graduates high school.

As a Poplar Hill mom, nothing makes me happier than watching my kid look up to the young women that she spends the most time with. Josephine is an incredible role model. She’s not just incredibly talented, but she works hard, takes wonderful care of Ecamorka, and always steps in to school a pony or to give one of her fellow riders advice. We are very grateful to ride with her! -Tatum and mom, Marisa @aponyandaponytail

Jane Marshall Dillon is my woman’s choice of inspiration. She taught me as a child, riding her little ponies, and I lived in her home at Full Cry Farm, Vienna, VA obtaining my equitation teaching certification as a young adult. Yes, she taught Kathy Kusner and Joe Fargis, but as both Joe and I agree, what we learned the most from Mrs Dillon was kindness. She had up to 60 horses and her riding school was mostly “school horses and ponies.” Her farm was a home and children and horses were family. Her standards were high and horses were brought to the ring impeccably groomed, not to look pretty, but to make sure that we knew that a bit of mud on a hock could cause capped hock and a little dirt in the corner of a horse’s eye is uncomfortable to the horse. When she walked into the ring we would line up side by side ( she liked group lessons so we were comfortable around groups of horses and people) and she would speak to us about what we were going to do in the lesson and look at how we and our horses were turned out. I remember one time, she pulled out a tissue from her pocket walking over to one of the horses and saying: “oh, you have something in your eye”, gently wiping it clean. I remember it to this day. It was an act of kindness that we all learned about. Her standards we impeccable and her students were family. I remember her telling me that in this business of horses, it could be rough and dirty, but remember to always be a lady. And a lady she was, with her large brimmed hats at horse shows and dinner always being served in her home in candlelight. We had spent the day riding and teaching and taking care of horses, but now was a time to have a proper lovely meal and talk about things other than horses.

When my daughter was three, I would drive from silver spring to Vienna just so she would have the experience of Mrs. Dillon teaching her and learning in a family environment.

We all miss her, but her kindness still guides us. - Betty

In honor of Women's History Month, I want to highlight some of my role models. Kathy Kusner tops that list. Kathy was among the first women to ride for the US Team, and the first women to earn a medal in the Olympics in Equestrian Sports. Show jumping wasn't the only equestrian sport In which Kathy broke barriers. Kathy was the first women to attain her jockey's license.
Among her numerous achievements she made time to give back, starting Horses in the Hood. Having the opportunity to get to know her on a person level has inspired me to always keep going when things get hard, always be brave and remember no barrier is too big.

Hello IEA Riders- I would like the opportunity to judge for you during the 2018-2019 season or give a clinic from the judge’s view. As a past coach for both IEA and IHSA teams, I have a clear understanding on show rules. I have been judging Intercollegiate and Interscholastic shows for many years and understand judging past a horse that may have a less than desirable trait. I live in Raleigh, North Carolina. I am happy to travel. Please have your coach contact me to judge for you. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Stella Prescott "r" Hunter, Jumpers & Hunter Seat Equitation USHJA Certified Trainer 843-247-3378 [email protected]
