The Honor System (Apparently Optional)
Welcome, dear customer, step right on up,
To honey so fine you’ll want more than a cup.
The sign says “Honor System”—simple and clear,
But that seems more… decorative… to some who come here.
A jar costs 12 dollars—yes, 12,, not three,
Though some brave souls test new math creatively.
They leave a few coins and stroll on away,
Confident they’ve “supported” the bees for the day.
And then there are legends—bold, slick, and funny—
Who skip the whole step and just liberate honey.
Fifty bucks vanished! A magical trick!
Houdini would blush at a move quite that slick.
Of course, the bees noticed. They’re not very pleased.
They worked every flower, every clover, every breeze.
They didn’t clock out, they didn’t cut corners—
They also don’t love freeloaders or “bargain reformers.”
So here’s a reminder, since hints didn’t land:
“Honor System” still means you actually pay at the stand.
Not “pay what you feel,” not “pay when you’re flush,”
Not “take it for free and leave in a rush.”
But hey—if honesty’s just too much bother,
Feel free to explain it to the beekeeper… and the bees… and your mother.
Thanks kindly,
The family (and several thousand unimpressed bees)
