COMING IN HOT!! First round of chickens arrived today with only minor issues. Whole chickens, legs, and thighs are back in stock. Come see us and stock up. I’m gonna go see if I can get this tire patched.

A shower and cooler temps has the cows feeling good. Mama cow wasn’t interested in playing, but the other young ones were having fun.

Porter wanted to make a video to advertise his egg business. His rooster, Oscar (the grouch), wasn't having it!

Two things I want to show with this post. The first is that the farm isn’t always pretty. This is where I fed hay for a month and what’s left usually looks pretty rough. The second thing I want to show today is how nature is a great metaphor for life. Before something can get better we usually have to break it down first. Like a wildfire across the prairie or moving my chicken tractors across the field. I chose this spot in the field because it was an under producing area. By feeding the cows here I’ve introduced lots of nutrients through hay and the animal waste. It will take a while for it all to be broken down and incorporated into the soil, but when it is, this area will be much better than before. So just because your life may seem bare and covered in s**t, just hang on because great things are coming.

Spring means feeding chickens early, rushing to baseball and softball practices, then getting home before dark to move the cows. And as you can see, I worked yesterday to get our first batch of chickens out on pasture, so cue the crazy wind or late March blizzard.

Training up a new stockman. One of the advantages of management intensive grazing is the relationship you can build with the animals. If you move them everyday they become more relaxed in your presence and they know that when you come around it usually means fresh food. So, even a young person can move the cows.

Moved the cows out on some fresh pasture for the first time this spring. I’ll flash graze for a few days, giving them access to some green grass but then still feeding some hay. They were definitely some happy cows.
Fun fact, did you know cows use their tongues to reach out and pull forage into their mouth. They also do not have upper incisors, only a hard dental pad. You can see the cow in the second video reaching out with her tongue.
