A great brunch was had at Deep City! Deep city

Got the double whammy of getting to enjoy the culinary work of Chef Charles (of Penny Clyde lore) and his team, whilst planning for this fall’s Grand Point North waterfront concert! Grand Point North

Grace was full of lightning and thunder, all about her Smoked Chicken Cobb Salad. 🎸🥗 Grace Potter

I got the Rock & Bowl because it has ‘rocket sauce’ and I was lunching with a rockstar. It rocked. 🪨🚀

Joining us, with a Sesame-Peanut Noodle Salad, the brilliant Executive Director of Grand Point Foundation Naomi Parekh, who’s been all over the state this past year learning about and supporting arts initiatives and rising creatives.

A joy. ☀️

That rancid smell is a crucial agricultural tradition! Thank you to all the farmers for doing then hot, and sometimes smelly, work to make food.

If you know which farm and who this farmer is, please DM me or tag them in the comments.

Thank you to Wilkins-Harley of Barre for the beautiful land to see our beautiful state. 🏍️

Meet Fez — a butcher at Roma’s and a farmer who’s put in seasons at Luna Bleu and Cedar Circle (plus farms beyond Vermont). 🧑‍🌾

We caught up with Fez at Sunrise Farm in Hartford to break down one of the best ways to ‘Eat Vermont’: the CSA. 🥬

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. You pay up front for a season-long share, which gives farmers the cash to cover staff and bills throughout the growing season.

In return, you get an ever-changing haul of farm-fresh fruits and veggies as each crop comes into season. 🍓🌽

It’s an effective way to support local ag and your own health at the same time.

The season’s already rolling, so shares may be spoken for but it’s worth checking with Sunrise and farms around the state, and a great thing to aim for next year. 🌱

Meet Max — the baker behind Max & Co. Bakehouse in Essex. 🍞 Sourdough baker in Essex Vermont

Max and his wife Lindsay are full-time wedding photographers. They met in the Virgin Islands where Max was a dive instructor, but after moving to Vermont a few years ago, Max needed something to carry him through winter... so with no previous experience, he started baking sourdough.

Baboom, he’s a baker!

Max started upstairs in his home kitchen then outgrew the space and built a commercial kitchen in their basement, where he handshapes and bakes sourdough and focaccia with wild fermented yeast.

He applies what I imagine is the same eye for detail that makes great photograph into his bread. His cheesy sourdoughs are very well balanced. Great cheese layer but with some space to let the sourdough stands. 🧀

Catch him at the Burlington and Essex farmers markets  or find his bread at any number of local spots.

Meet Rebecca, the maker behind Holy Halvah in Bristol. 🍯✨ Holy Halvah

Halvah is an ancient sesame sweet from the Middle East and the Balkans. Rebecca grew up on it.

But the supermarket version is loaded with sugar and corn syrup. Rebecca’s is tastier, healthier, and more Vermont: naturally sweetened with maple syrup. 🍁

Four real, simple ingredients: tahini, maple syrup, salt, and vanilla. Organic, vegan, no emulsifiers or preservatives. Good. STUFF!

Fun fact: the name was born when Rebecca gave a sample to her neighbor Shaun. A little later her phone buzzed with a text: “HOLY HALVAH!” 😂

Now they’re life partners *and* business partners. They also serve creemees topped with halvah crumble, and a black sesame creemee you won’t find anywhere else.🍦

👉🏼 On creemees, Eat Vermont’s Great Vermont Creemee Challenge is ON! 🍦💥

Hit three spots in June, use our free Eat Vermont mobile app to check-in and vote, and you’ll get an invite to our party at month’s end.

Buying direct from a farmer, such as at their farmstand, is the **best** way to support a Vermont farmer. This one is Isham Brook Farm.

Why?

💸 When a farmer sells wholesale, for example to a grocery store, that grocery needs to make money when selling to the final customer. Wholesale pricing = lower money home for the farmer. (Still, local groceries play a very important, positive role helping bring locally grown / raised food to the public! 🫶🏼)

💰 When a farmer sells to someone directly, they get to keep the *WHOLE* sale price. This is usually the ~same price of the product sold at the grocery store. Retail = all the money goes to the farmer’s pocket.

Anyway, you’ll notice farmstands and on-farm shops all across the Green Mountain State, I encourage you to stop in. You’ll be getting the freshest food and know exactly where it comes from. 💚

Thanks to all Vermont farmers and Wilkins Harley-Davidson in Barre for the sweet ride. Wilkins Harley-Davidson
