For nearly two decades, mandatory country-of-origin labeling (MCOOL) for beef has been clouded by misinformation and corporate influence. What should be a simple matter of honesty in the marketplace has been turned into a complex policy debate that leaves producers undervalued and consumers in the dark.

The facts show MCOOL works, consumers want it, and the only ones who benefit from its absence are a handful of multinational packers.

We’re launching a new series breaking down the most common arguments used against reinstating MCOOL for beef. First up: “Consumers don’t care where their beef comes from”

Consumers do care where their beef comes from, and the data is overwhelming. Polling consistently shows that Americans want clear labels and prefer American beef when they can identify it.

Grocery stores already use origin labels on seafood, fruits, vegetables, and other proteins. Beef is the outlier. Adding origin labeling to beef simply gives consumers the same transparency they already expect across the rest of the grocery store.

The 2022 Morning Consult poll of registered American voters found:
✅ Most Americans support MCOOL, 86% support the American Beef Labeling Act.
✅Voters want honest labels, 90% are concerned that imported beef can legally carry a Product of the U.S.A. sticker even if it was born, raised, and harvested in another country.
✅Americans want accurate food safety information. 89% are concerned that foreign beef can carry a U.S. inspection mark.
✅Voters want American beef. 77% say it is important that the beef they buy was born, raised, and harvested in the U.S.
✅ Americans vote on this issue. 74% say they’re more likely to vote for a member of Congress who supports MCOOL. That support is bipartisan among Democrats and Republicans.
