So… did my NYC flower farm survive the Nor’easter?

After spending the day staking, moving, harvesting, and preparing everything I could, it was finally time to see how the flowers actually held up.

A few broken branches and a whole lot of wind later… I’d say the garden handled it pretty well.

Turns out I was considerably more worried about the storm than the dahlias were.

These flowers just keep on giving. Every time I think I've made a dent, I come back a few days later and there are somehow more waiting for me.

All grown right here in Fresh Meadows, Queens and headed into this week's bouquets.

The Benary's Giants especially have been living up to their name - some of these are big-butt zinnias.

Rainwater + fall weather = happy flowers

All my flowers needed after surviving a hot NYC summer was a good drink and some cooler weather.

Almost everything you see here is watered entirely with rainwater collected from my roof and stored in my 300-gallon system. Watching the garden respond like this makes building the whole thing feel pretty worth it.

What an understated QUEEN.

Dahlia Sandra may not be the loudest flower in the garden, but she really doesn't need to be.

The dinner plates are showing off.

A few of the giant dahlias are blooming at my little NYC Flower farm right now. It still blows my mind that flowers this ridiculous are growing right here in Queens, New York.

The 300-gallon rainwater system finally got to clock in.

Nothing more satisfying than watching all that rain come off the roof and actually fill the barrels up.

This is what the system looks like during a real NYC rainstorm. Down the gutter, into the barrels, and pumped into the garden.

And yes, I absolutely stand there watching the barrels fill as my entertainment.

Here’s the complete system setup to water my micro flower farm with 100% rainwater in NYC.

After getting a few questions about my rain barrel setup, I figured I’d show you exactly how it works. From the barrels and connections to the pump that actually gets the water out to the garden.

It’s a surprisingly simple system, and it’s helped me make use of hundreds of gallons of rainwater that would otherwise head toward the storm drain.

Dahlia ‘Thomas Edison’ understood the assignment.

This plant has been absolutely pumping out blooms all season — apparently with a few passengers included.
