October is here and it’s time to think pink for breast cancer awareness month. Thank you to New Kent Fire for placing an order with us with your Breast Cancer Awareness t-shirts! We are honored to create apparel that shows support and brings awareness to such an important mission and also represents the strength, courage, and compassion of those affected by breast cancer.

It is great to see departments like New Kent Fire using their platform to spread awareness and show support for survivors, fighters, families, and those we have lost.

Congratulations on Your Retirement, Chief Opett!

New Kent Professional Firefighters would like to congratulate Chief Opett on his retirement from New Kent Fire-Rescue and thank him for his many years of dedicated service to our department and community.

Under Chief Opett’s leadership, New Kent Fire-Rescue experienced tremendous growth and progression. From significant increases in career staffing and improvements in salaries and compensation, to major investments in apparatus, equipment, and fire stations, his leadership helped strengthen the department and position it for continued success well into the future.

We are extremely grateful for Chief Opett’s commitment to improving the working conditions and resources available to our firefighters while ensuring New Kent County continued to receive high-quality emergency services.

Chief, thank you for your leadership, your service, and the lasting impact you have made on New Kent Fire-Rescue.

Congratulations on a well-earned retirement, Chief Opett! We wish you nothing but the best in this next chapter.

At approximately 9:42 this morning, New Kent Fire-Rescue was dispatched for a reported house fire in Station 502’s district.

Units from Stations 501, 502, 503, 504, 505 and 506 responded, along with mutual aid from Henrico, James City, and Charles City counties.

Upon arrival, the first-due crew deployed an extinguishing device to help limit the spread of the fire until additional crews arrived. Once adequate personnel were on scene, crews quickly brought the fire under control and completed extinguishment.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters. Sadly, one dog did not survive the fire.

Flying Squad Rehab responded to provide rehabilitation and support for crews operating on the incident.

New Kent Professional Firefighters would like to thank all of our mutual-aid partners who responded to the scene and assisted with coverage throughout the county while our units were committed.

Strong teamwork between neighboring departments continues to be an important part of protecting our communities.

Sometimes the calls that mean the most are the ones you don’t expect.

Last night, crews from Station 502 responded to a carbon monoxide alarm and were greeted by a familiar face. Just over a year ago, Mrs. McCoy suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Crews from Stations 502 and 506 responded, and thanks to immediate bystander CPR, early defibrillation, and rapid EMS care, she survived.

Seeing Mrs. McCoy again was a powerful reminder of why early intervention matters. This reunion highlights the lifesaving importance of learning CPR, having access to an AED, and taking action before first responders arrive. Those first few minutes can make all the difference.

Pictured are Mrs. McCoy (right) and Lt. Grainer (left), the paramedic in charge of her care during that cardiac arrest response. We’re grateful to see her doing well and thankful for everyone whose quick actions helped make this reunion possible.

New Kent Fire & Rescue crews are currently working multiple motor vehicle crashes with injuries on I-64.

With rain, reduced visibility, and heavy traffic, we ask everyone to slow down, increase your following distance, and drive with caution.

Most importantly, move over for emergency vehicles and first responders working along the roadway. A few extra seconds can make all the difference in keeping everyone safe.

Please be patient, stay alert, and help us get everyone home safely.
