Sometimes the calls that mean the most are the ones you don’t expect.

Last night, crews from Station 502 responded to a carbon monoxide alarm and were greeted by a familiar face. Just over a year ago, Mrs. McCoy suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Crews from Stations 502 and 506 responded, and thanks to immediate bystander CPR, early defibrillation, and rapid EMS care, she survived.

Seeing Mrs. McCoy again was a powerful reminder of why early intervention matters. This reunion highlights the lifesaving importance of learning CPR, having access to an AED, and taking action before first responders arrive. Those first few minutes can make all the difference.

Pictured are Mrs. McCoy (right) and Lt. Grainer (left), the paramedic in charge of her care during that cardiac arrest response. We’re grateful to see her doing well and thankful for everyone whose quick actions helped make this reunion possible.

New Kent Fire & Rescue crews are currently working multiple motor vehicle crashes with injuries on I-64.

With rain, reduced visibility, and heavy traffic, we ask everyone to slow down, increase your following distance, and drive with caution.

Most importantly, move over for emergency vehicles and first responders working along the roadway. A few extra seconds can make all the difference in keeping everyone safe.

Please be patient, stay alert, and help us get everyone home safely.

Last night, just before midnight, crews from New Kent Fire Rescue responded to the Patriots Landing subdivision for a reported structure fire.

First-arriving companies from Station 506 encountered a residence with heavy smoke showing from the attic and visible fire on the Charlie side of the structure. Engine 506 initiated an aggressive interior fire attack while Engine 502 established exposure protection to prevent the fire from extending to nearby homes.

Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of all personnel on scene, the fire was brought under control rapidly, limiting further damage.

Strong work by all crews involved, and thank you to our mutual aid partners for their assistance.

On Sunday, crews from Engine 502, Squad 505, and Quint 501 responded to the report of an inside gas leak in a residence.

Upon arrival, firefighters quickly identified an active gas leak within the home. Crews secured the gas supply, ventilated the residence, and monitored conditions to ensure the area was safe. The scene was then turned over to Virginia Natural Gas for further investigation and repairs.

Great work by all responding personnel in quickly identifying the hazard and protecting the occupants and surrounding community.

Water Rescue Training 🚤

This week, New Kent Fire Rescue personnel conducted water rescue training utilizing our Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB). Crews practiced both surface water and swift water rescue operations, including maneuvering against the tide to simulate victim pick-off scenarios while maintaining a stable position for safe patient loading.
Training also focused on boat launching, recovery, loading procedures, and overall vessel operations to ensure crews remain prepared for emergencies on the water.

New Kent Fire-Rescue crews are currently operating in the area of Hopewell Road due to a tree that has fallen into power lines and caught fire.

🚧 Hopewell Road is CLOSED between Hilton Woods Drive and Dickerson Road while the tree is removed and fire extinguished. 🚧

Please avoid the area and seek an alternate route while emergency crews and utility personnel work to mitigate the hazard and restore safe travel conditions.

Multiple Crashes Cause Major Delays on I-64 Yesterday Evening

Yesterday evening, crews from Stations 501, 502, 505, and 506 responded to numerous motor vehicle accidents along Interstate 64 between mile markers 204 and 211 in both the eastbound and westbound lanes. These incidents occurred over just a few hours and ranged from minor fender benders to overturned vehicles, resulting in significant traffic delays and roadway shutdowns.

Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. We are grateful for the quick actions of our firefighters, EMS providers, law enforcement officers, and VDOT personnel who worked together to keep the public safe and restore traffic flow.

During these responses, crews encountered several dangerous situations involving motorists who failed to move over for emergency vehicles, did not slow down while passing active scenes, and ignored traffic control directions. In multiple instances, vehicles drove directly into emergency work areas, placing responders, patients, and other motorists at unnecessary risk.

We want to remind everyone that Virginia’s Move Over Law is not optional. When approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights:

➡️ Move over one lane when safe to do so.
➡️ Slow down if changing lanes is not possible.
➡️ Follow directions from emergency personnel and law enforcement.
➡️ Stay alert and avoid distractions while driving.

Every responder working on the side of the road deserves to return home safely at the end of their shift. Your attention and cooperation can make all the difference.
