New Orleans Eat Local Challenge

New Orleans Eat Local Challenge Eat Local NOLA began as the Eat Local Challenge in 2010 as part of the locavore movement.

Eat Local NOLA is a celebration and exploration of Louisiana’s agricultural and seafood resources, encouraging Gulf residents to support local food and beverage businesses. The Eat Local Challenge was held during the month of June every year and featured a jam-packed 30 days of events, workshops, and deals celebrating local food. Due to pandemic restrictions and social changes in 2020, the Eat L

ocal Challenge shifted to focus on supporting local restaurants and growers/producers throughout the year. After considering food access as such a challenge, Eat Local NOLA became the new identity of the Eat Local Challenge.

We’re starting off the year with the perfect touch to a planning meeting, a box of chocolates from !
Piety and Desire processes their chocolate from “bean to bar”, meaning they produce their chocolate starting with cocoa beans then roasting, winnowing, grinding, refining and tempering in house.
Though we do not grow cocoa beans here, you can still enjoy a nice treat and support a local company like Piety and Desire! Cheers to 2026🥂

In Louisiana, we are truly spoiled to local delicious food! While you’re traveling visiting family and friends, we encourage you to visit roadstop markets such as the Cajun Fresh Market in Raceland, La.

No matter where you are, from New England to the Midwest to the West Coast, supporting local markets like these support local farmers and keeps dollars circulating in the local economy.

Local food also tastes better since it is picked at the height of freshness and reduces carbon emissions due to shorter travel distances. Getting to know your local farmers (that are some of the most generous folks) and learning to eat with the seasons and geography are added bonuses!

Enjoy the gift of local food this holiday season!

This year for National Gumbo Day we’re digging in with Kyle Crosby, founder and creator of Louisiana Dread.

Kyle was born and raised along Bayou Lafourche and is dedicated to preserving and sharing Louisiana’s rich history, culture, and folklore through online series. He brings awareness to important cultural aspects of Louisiana through series such as Quick History, Louisiana Drinks, Notable Estates, and Local Lingo (including Cajun French Terms).

Kyle has reviewed over 200 gumbos across the state and is sharing his top 5 today! Visit louisianadread.com/gumborankings
to check out the whole list.

Are you celebrating gumbo today? Whether you’re supporting Louisiana farmers by using local ingredients or supporting a local food establishment, we want to share! Send us your gumbo pics (and let us know what you’ve sourced locally to make your own).

We’re bridging the gap between our littlest learners and local farmers! Through our Farm to Early Care and Education (ECE) initiative, we’re ensuring fresh, locally grown food reaches early childhood programs while fostering healthy habits for life.

This month’s Farmer Spotlight: Meet Matt Ranatza, a grower based in Belle Chasse, La bringing tomatoes for local kids’ June meals and snacks.

Together, we’re cultivating a love for local food and strengthening connections between farmers, educators, and families. Learn more about how we’re building a sustainable food system, one tiny bite at a time! If you’re interested in connecting your little ones to local food, check out our enrichment guide available at the link in our bio!
