This is a 12 hour fill, kid sharing the other 12 hours. First doe is a 4th freshener, 2nd is a 2nd freshener.

Over 4.5 cups for Ruby and 3.5 for Pearl!

I wish I had shaved her udder so I could truly admire it! May have to be a goal this week after fixing the buck fence πŸ‘€ (a tree fell on it earlier and they have figured out now they can pull it down there and roam around free and wild πŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™€οΈ).

Red, White & Belews Farm Ruby milked a whopping nearly 5 cups (2 lbs 5.6oz) on a 12 hour fill, while nursing kids the other 12 hours, while being 3 weeks fresh. 😱 I can't wait to see how she progresses this lactation!

I very well may be retaining all doe kids from her going forward πŸ‘€

I like to keep a very small amount of goats so have to be very picky. In order to keep numbers down, I'm making some cuts from my keeper does. I retained this girl because I absolutely love her width and rear leg set, however I've decided to focus on some of my other lines.

Very sweet, very wide, and very deep bodied (these pictures are older, she's put on a lot more depth) with long teats. Her dam was very easy to milk and her sire came from milk stars lines.

So...during this winter storm I've been doing a lot of things. Taking care of the animals. Playing with my kids. Making snow cream. Puzzling.

And watching this YouTube channel called Early American.

The premise of it is this couple that dresses like they are...well...early Americans. And I think they do a lot of early American lifestyle videos, but the ones I was captivated by were the cooking videos. One of the videos they made something called "breakfast cake" and it honestly looked quite good! I'm always interested in cooking more simply so I thought "why not try it?"

Well I didn't use the recipe in the video, but I did do some research and came up with this recipe. And you know what...it was fantastic!!! Honestly, kind of like a less sweet cornbread? My kids loved it! I think my daughter ate 5 or 6 pieces. So I thought I'd share below. Traditionally it is served with a glass of milk. I gave my kids that and their daily smoothie (because while not historical, it is nutritious), and for myself I had a smoothie and some scrambled eggs. I believe this will become a staple in our house, so I thought I'd share the recipe.

Recipe:

2 cups flour + 1 cup cornmeal
Β½ cup sugar
2 eggs
1Β½ cups milk (or buttermilk if you have it)
ΒΌ cup melted butter or lard
1 tablespoon baking powder
Β½ teaspoon salt

Optional:
1 tsp cinnamon or nutmeg
Β½ cup raisins or chopped apple

Heat oven to 350Β°F
Mix dry ingredients
Mix wet ingredients
Combine until just mixed
Pour into a greased 9x13 pan
Bake 35–45 minutes, until set
Cool slightly, slice thick.

Enjoy!

Winter storm photo dump.

We didn't lose power (so far 🀞) so the animals were warm and toasty in the barn, except for the ducks who genuinely don't seem phased. I'm pretty sure they went to the creek (which was frozen).

Not my normal content, but while I was held hostage by my does waiting for them to kid, I decided to paint my kids' bathroom door and cabinets. πŸ˜… Next I plan on *attempting* to paint a mural on the wall.

Our first kidding of the year produced this adorable doeling! πŸŽ‰

Her dam, Allure Acres The Black Pearl (SG RHV SMF Feldspar Matrix +*B x Leisure Time TW Dragonfly Moon), has the softest udder in my herd. She is also long and dairy and very correct, with tight shoulders, straight legs, and a well attached udder.

Her sire, Bella Fattoria Chakra Bocas *B (Better Wayz I’ll Have Another *B x Better Wayz Chakra 5*M AR VEVE88), is out of lines of 1000-2000lb milkers out of both sides. He is the buck I talked about in my last post with that gorgeous littermate sister!

We are still waiting on Ruby, who was due back on the 17th but is taking her time, in true Ruby fashion. πŸ˜…
