Boone met the cows this weekend for the first time. He was understandably afraid of these big (noisy) animals. But he enjoyed watching them from a distance. Honey just couldn’t help herself and had to come inspect the new bundle. Everyone was very polite. For now! Dehydrating blueberries is going much better this year. Adding a quick dip in a honey solution has made a world of difference preventing them from getting hard. They are wonderful. I also resorted to piercing them individually instead of blanching. I really didn’t want the mess or to cook them at all. Very pleased with the results! On tray 4 now. I’m trying to diversify my preserving this year so that everything isnt in jam or in the freezer. So we are having trouble naming the last calf of the season. This little heifer is from new mama Raisin (and grandma Oatmeal). She has blue eyes and likes to escape fences. She looks black but was sired by a dun (tan) bull and will likely be a brindle brown. Sweet and friendly as @bojangles iced tea. Most of our herd has breakfast food names (because we like breakfast around here). Except for Monkey who I secretly call Toast. But we’ve made no progress on naming this one. Hoping she will eventually become a milker. Name should be short enough to yell loudly across a field. The winning name will receive a jar of our coveted NC #sourwood #honey. Perfect for breakfast or anytime you have a warm biscuit. Somebody is excited that it is #NationalPollinatorWeek! These girls celebrated with a swarm @ninja cow farm today. Special thanks to the queen who chose a low fence post for the stopover. After collecting them, a few hours later farmer Dan calls and asks where the swarm went. “I got it” I said. “Then there’s another one,” Dan said. Sigh. So much #celebrating in one week. It's Earth Day! Google is celebrating with a Doodle game about bees. If you have kids (or feel like a kid) it's fun to be a bee. The only thing lacking is a beekeeper to sting occasionally. :)

If you stick with the game long enough you get some great pollinator facts. [One technical note, honeybees (but not true of all pollinators) don't visit multiple types of flowers on the same visit. It's part of what makes them so efficient in pollinating agricultural crops.]
