Thompson Farms Gourds

We create art from gourds, many of which are grown on our Raleigh, MS, farm. Members of Craftsmen's Guild of Mississippi. Mike and Michelle Thompson, Raleigh, MS

We create art from gourds, many of which are grown on our Smith County, MS, farm. Techniques include cutting, carving, woodburning, drilling, and dyeing/coloring. We love rich, transparent colors inspired by nature. Many people comment on the natural appearance of our gourds. You can still see the gourd—they’re not overdone. The transformation from a plain ol’ dirty gourd to a beautifully handcrafted gourd is not an easy one. Part of the transformation is a chore and part is fun—just like life!

Some new thunder gourds in the gallery! Three leather-dyed and three painted ones. We love the great natural hammered-look texture on the gourd we used for the green metallic hummingbird! You can see and feel the texture.

Yesterday Mike and I took more gourds to the gallery at the Waller (Mississippi) Craft Center in Ridgeland, MS. Two metallic-painted thunder gourds and three maroon leather-dyed scalloped rim bowls with lids. Two of the bowls feature carved damselflies.

Mike and I took some new gourds to the gallery at the Waller (Mississippi) Craft Center in Ridgeland, MS, yesterday. Pictured is the beaded circles luminary we took. It is teal metallic with colored 6 and 8mm beads. Makes me think of zinnias in a flower garden. I use a gourd luminary with 4 watt bulb as a night light. I don’t switch it off—burns day and night. Makes me happy. We also took a thunder gourd with Mississippi-shaped sound hole. I only have pics of the luminary. Mike made two beautiful gourd puzzles—kettle gourds each cut into five pieces. One is burgundy and light tan leather dyes; the other is mostly brown tones of leather dyes.

Four more gourds delivered to the gallery at the Waller (Mississippi) Craft Center in Ridgeland, MS, today. Two thunder gourds and two bowls. I’m kinda partial to the damselflies.

Yesterday Mike and I took more thunder gourds to the gallery at the Waller (Mississippi) Craft Center in Ridgeland, MS. It was a rainy and cool day, certainly not a good day for outside pics. A bench against the wall in the Craft Center worked out just fine. If you get a chance to go to the Craft Center, check out our thunder gourds!

Yesterday Mike and I took 8 thunder gourds to the gallery at the Waller (Mississippi) Craft Center in Ridgeland, MS. Before we got to the door, a group of folks were coming out of the gallery. Beth introduced us. It was a group of exchange students from England visiting Hinds Junior College in Raymond, MS. They were fascinated with the thunder gourds. Beth and I demonstrated two of the new ones we had brought and one of the students gave it a try, too. Each thunder gourd has a unique sound; low-pitched, high-pitched and in between. Just gotta try ‘em out!

Mike and I took five thunder gourds to the gallery at the Waller (Mississippi) Craft Center in Ridgeland yesterday. A group of 4th grade students were enjoying activities at the center.

Getting started on a new group of Thundergourds. Hoping to soon add these and some others to our display at the Bill Waller( Mississippi) Craft Center Gallery in Ridgeland, Mississippi!
