Someone make this make sense to me please. I’ve said from the beginning silkies aren’t my favorites, but lately I’ve been thinking of them a lot. Through a twist of fate, I get ahold of some beautiful birds, and now this.

Why? Why does crap like this happen? I’m not the crying sort but I’ve cried more in the last two months over my animals than I have in the last three years combined.

I said I was going to stop making plans because every time I do something happens to the key animal involved. This time there was no plan and three of them still vanished without a trace. I’m feeling very discouraged lately and I’m only at the point of doing this for me.

I can’t help but feel like I crossed a bad luck fairy somewhere, and she’s taking it out on my animals.

I think someone is messing with my birds. I’ve had three beautiful black full grown silkies vanish without a trace. Everyone else in the pen is accounted for. There are no holes, rips, tears, gashes or any others means of escape anywhere. The wire used is a small gauge. There is wire on the bottom and top. And again all other occupants (smaller than silkies) were accounted for. My other silkies were accounted for, but my brand new to me three black silkies are gone. It’s like they learned magic and ported themselves to someplace green and sunny.

We walked the immediate area around the house. No sign of little bodies or feathers anywhere. The only thing I can come up with is someone took them. Otherwise, why would only the three black ones be gone?

John is putting locks on all the coop doors. It won’t stop someone from cutting their way in, but it’ll slow them down or at least make them think twice. Game cameras are also going up. This makes me absolutely sick.

Pigs vs cantaloupe

This is a long one, but they sure did enjoy themselves. I even got Kevin sitting for us. My husband is almost 6ft, so that should give you an idea just how big these ladies and gents are. They’re gentle giants, though. Even Talus the donkey got in on it, though he didn’t get much. I strictly limit his sugar intake.

Gigi is walking fine today. Maybe it was the mud. Or maybe the cantaloupe was a really good motivator, lol. I’ll post the video tomorrow. It’s along one.

Yesterday, John was out hand feeding the pigs. He loves to do that. I was telling him how he needs to teach them to sit because we have six large pigs and they get a bit carried away when snacks are involved. I said sit to him a few times in conversation when I noticed something odd…

I don’t know which, because we are forever getting them confused, especially when muddy, but either Kevin or Albert was sitting waiting for a treat. I wish I’d gotten it on film, but the pants I had on had no pockets and my phone was in the house. I’m hoping the one will help teach the others. They are so dang smart and far cuter than they should be.

As homesteaders we should be against AI, so why are so many using AI to create images for their pages? Sure they look nice, but they make me cringe when I see them. I prefer pics of your animals to AI generated stuff.

This is Gigi. I’ve noticed her moving a bit slower but thought nothing of it. Yesterday, I noticed she was sort of shuffling her back legs like she was in pain. John caught her and the squeals were on. OMG is she loud.

We saw nothing wrong with either back foot. I did clean a clump of mud from between her toes. It’s also possible one of the guys injured her hip during courting. There is nothing gentle (or quiet) about pig romance.

Either way, it may slow her walk but if food is present she’s a rocket, and if she’s caught while we try to examine a foot, she’s a fighter. It took two grown men to hold her, and that barely worked. She’s anywhere from 250-300lbs.

Also we believe (though we aren’t 💯 %) Aughra, Maimie, Jenny and possibly Keekee are expecting. Gracie may be as well. He’ll, Gigi should be by now, too. There’s going to be a pig explosion around here, and Jethro Porcine is to blame!

In better news, I found these two little gems in the brooder box of my newer hatchlings. Frizzles! Now, I didn’t hatch the silkie chick. I got it from a very nice lady I recently met. I did hatch the other chick, though. Isn’t it darling?

I also emptied out two incubators today. A mix of bantams, EEs, and Ameraucanas. Cuteness overload. They’ve since been reset with more bantams, a couple OEs, and more EEs.
