I’ve been so pleased with the grow out rates on these Pekin ducks. We have two different batches, but the larger ones are younger than the geese they are with in the picture.

Do you see meat when you look at them too? 👀 I cannot wait to process and taste some.

Keeping with yesterday’s theme of how important rest is. If I encourage you to do nothing else on your farm, I hope I encourage you to rotate your livestock. Let the ground rest. It’ll thank you for it.

If you know our farm and livestock, you may have immediately thought “yeah but…”. Put that aside. Whatever that thought is, it doesn’t matter.

Move. Rest. Repeat.

Can you see the strips of darker, deeper shades of green?

These birds have improved this end of the pasture by the rotation we’ve put them on. It’s visible with the naked eye. Yes, it would be more beneficial if we had a big, self-mobile coop to run the length of the field behind the cattle, but we don’t have that and we’re making good use of what we do have. We move our tractors twice a day. If you leave chickens stationary, they will kill everything under foot and have nothing left to eat.

Move. Rest. Repeat.

Ellett let me know last night this is his favorite chore. He likes to drive the four wheeler and pull the coops himself. Our kids may one day run from this kind of life with all they have, but I don’t think they will. They are beginning to appreciate the creatures that feed them. That’s something lost on so many.

It’s a good, good life out here. ✌️

Using my Mamaw’s pressure canner by myself for the first time this weekend made me a little nervous. I’ve ‘helped’ can since I was a kid. But being the adult in charge with this kind of canner hit a little differently.

The milk is just the tip of the iceberg.

If we had to give up a bird type on our farm….. it wouldn’t be ducks.

Better foragers.
Harder workers.
Not as bad of a nuisance.
More meat per bird.

This morning I reached out to a friend of mine asking for podcast recommendations. This is not an unusual conversation between us. We’re separated by distance at this phase in our lives, but have remained friends for about 30 years. While we were talking, the conversation shifted from podcasts to challenging our beliefs as Christians (in a healthy way) and the signs of fruit or lack thereof. My mind continued to spin from this thought. We should bear fruit as Christians. This is clear in scripture – there is no argument. How can I bear fruit? What do I need? Can I examine my own life for fruit?

It’s ironic because I had already snapped this picture as I was tending to ducklings this morning behind the barn. I was focused on the sun and how beautiful the morning was, but then…. I noticed my empty garden beds and couldn’t help but laugh --- I got the beds put together but never got the garden planted. If that isn’t the story of my life, I don’t know what is. I can tell you, there will not be any fruit from those garden beds. There is no seed. There are no roots. See first, you must have a seed planted in your life. Titus 2:11 says “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men.” All. Every single one of us. We’ve all had a seed planted. Then, you need something to allow that seed to establish roots. That “something” is nourishment – for a fruit bearing plant, that looks like water, soil, and wind. For a Christian, that looks like studying, praying, and obedience to the Holy Spirit. Still at this point, there is no fruit. When the roots take hold and the base is strong in foundation, then, only then does the fruit come. Go read Galatians 5:22-23. Look at the fruit mentioned there. Do you have it? I’m asking myself the same question.
