This post has been a long time coming, but so hard to make.

For the past 7 months, our raw milk business has been put on hold because of my husband’s farming accident. Today we are going back home to the farm, but not back to a familiar way of life. We have made the decision to not continue selling raw milk. It is not easy typing that out. We worked HARD making this business successful. Quality was the top priority, and I am not willing to compromise that out of pride to keep the dream going. As cliche as that sounds, this business was truly a dream come true for us, but it’s time to move on.

Thank you to all of you, our wonderful customers. Thank you for trusting us to provide milk for your family, and for the beautiful friendships that have been made. Thank you for supporting our family and making our hard work worth it.

As was promised to all customers at first milk pick-up, your jar deposits are refundable and we will still be honoring that. If you would like to return your 4 Maids A-Milking jars, send a message and we can arrange that. If you would like to keep your jars, you can also do that.

If the day comes where our farm is able to sell milk again, you will be the first to know. If not, please know how much we appreciated you and your business.

Pictured is my best girl, 012 ❤️ I hope she is living her best life on a new dairy.

Today makes 5 months since Toby’s accident. He is still at QLI doing therapy and rehab, there is still a lot of recovery to make.

He had his skull bone flap put back on in early November. Surgery went well but recovery has been really difficult. He had an unexpected ER visit and hospital stay for what was thought to be a stroke, and continues to experience loss of sensation, loss of smell, loss of taste, and is really struggling mentally with anxiety and mood.

Our girls were able to visit us to celebrate Thanksgiving and it was wonderful to see them, and overwhelming for Toby. I worry about what our family life could possibly look like in the future. These pictures are the best moments from Toby’s good days. Not every day is like this.

Toby is very frustrated by comments about how good he seems to look, or how much he has improved…because he feels very different on the inside. Although said with good intent, comments like “you look great” aren’t helpful. Before telling us to just be positive, truly think how you might feel in our shoes. Toby needs acknowledgment that this IS hard, with no advice or comments after that. I’ve included some informational graphics about things that aren’t as helpful we might think they are, I’ve caught myself saying some of them, too.

As always, please keep praying.

Update on Toby:

Taking one day at a time. Progress has been slower these days, but still happening. Today he had another follow-up CT head scan and it showed no signs of further regression so the next step is surgery to put his skull bone flap back on.

🔹 Has started doing simple homework like spelling words with our girls via FaceTime

🔹 Cooked spaghetti mostly unassisted

🔹 Vertigo symptoms have subsided significantly, thankful for physical therapy!

🔹 Struggling with anxiety and mood swings

Toby does text, and it’s good for him to hear from people, but please be mindful and extra sensitive. “I’m thinking of you” and “I’m praying for you” are always safe things to say.

One of the pictures is a screenshot of dry humor jokes and educational material that Toby has started sending me lately. If you know him, you know this is very much “Toby” and I’m glad to see glimmers of that come back ❤️

Update on Toby:

He has spent almost 2 weeks at QLI and is starting to adjust to a new environment. He enjoys the therapists he works with and can usually find his way around campus on his own now. A few things he’s been working on:

🔹He has started using his cell phone and can text. Today he used his plant ID app to identify a plant that he didn’t recognize growing outside.

🔹Finding activities to do during downtime. Toby previously didn’t have downtime and always kept busy. If his mind isn’t busy, he gets anxious and his mood spirals. He has discovered a love (hidden talent?!) for playing pool and beats me daily, but it took awhile to convince him that pool could be fun.

🔹He spent some time in the QLI shop and will be spending some time woodworking. It was so good to see him use tools again and seem to enjoy it.

🔹Decision making is really hard for him but he tries hard to stay calm and narrow it down to two choices. When he got to QLI he couldn’t decide what clothes to wear each day. He has improved some and is deciding this week which type of wood to use for his shop project.

Sometimes I scroll back to pictures from 2 months ago and am starkly reminded how far he has come and how much “worse” it could be. But these posts are very much a highlight reel. There are a lot of really, really tough days and it’s hard to watch him struggle through things that used to be automatic. It’s not easy to hear “I just want to be normal”. But he keeps pushing forward, one day at a time.

Update on Toby:

He finished inpatient rehab in Sioux Falls and was accepted by QLI (Quality Living Inc.) in Omaha. We were able to spend a few days at home, which was a good test to see there is still a need for more rehab and therapy. Some days he could almost convince me that he’s back to himself; other days that Toby seems so far away.

As we drive to Omaha today, please pray for him. This will be another big change and he’s anxious and scared about many things. When he was evaluated by QLI, they said he is a “perfect candidate” for their program, and we are really hopeful this will be a really good place for him.

Pictured is our goal. Home again with our beautiful girls, back to “normal”.

Update on Toby:

Mostly good days, improving all the time. He’s getting tired of hospital life but is very aware that what he needs right now to keep getting better is therapy and rehab. A few positives..

🔹 Did a state capital crossword puzzle and suddenly remembered the song from elementary school that lists the states in alphabetical order

🔹 Remembered how to use a fork, up until this week it has been only spoons

🔹 Called one of our daughters his nickname for her, something unique to only them

🔹 Played a few board games, didn’t remember checkers right away but it was clicking after awhile

It’s an odd feeling to see your family pictured on a medical benefit flyer.

We cannot express how thankful we are to the people who organized this event, donated auction items, money and time… thank you.

We will not be physically present at the benefit, but know we will be thinking of everyone back in our wonderful community tomorrow morning.

Update on Toby:

More progress this week, he is doing very well in his therapies. Positives for the week:

🔹 Fried an egg and made toast with lots of assistance

🔹 Able to do more math, reading and telling time

🔹 His nurse let us escape across the street to a car show over the weekend. Toby enjoyed the cars but was socially overwhelmed.

He has started to become more aware of the accident and has a lot of questions. He becomes easily discouraged when he realizes his limitations. His whole care team has been supportive and encouraging, but Toby asked me today, “how bad was I before that they are this excited over me knowing what 6x2 is?” Please continue to pray for him. None of this has been easy.

Update on Toby:

A week at rehab has brought a lot of progress for Toby. It’s heartwarming for me to see genuine excitement on his therapists’ faces, some have been seeing him since the very beginning and are just as happy as I am to see Toby get better.

A few positive things Toby did this week:

🔹Appetite has drastically improved, he’s not quite on a normal diet but very close

🔹Put on and tied his own shoes after not wearing shoes for almost a month

🔹Can play simple card games, do basic mental math, and his nerdy science trivia is coming in hot- he informed us today that the grass is green “because of the chlorophyll” 🤓

🔹Prayed an Our Father with the priest who has been coming by to see him and remembered the words

It’s been good to see a lot of Toby things come back ❤️

Update on Toby:

Today is 3 weeks since his accident, and he made a big step in recovery by moving out of the hospital to a rehab facility in Sioux Falls. Tomorrow he will begin therapy and if you know Toby, he is always eager to learn, so I’m hopeful that he will do very well and progress.

A few positives to note this week:

🔹 Recognizing and remembering more family members. If he remembers a name, he might forget it a few minutes later but this is still progress.

🔹 Brushed his own teeth and snapped one snap on his shirt.

🔹 Fed himself a few bites with a spoon today, not every meal but he has not recognized a spoon until today.

🔹 Recognized his favorite Nickelback music 🙉

If you’re thinking wow, he’s doing great! - he is. But there are a lot of hard moments, and hard days too. I do see all of your encouraging messages and Facebook comments, and am humbled by all of our community support. Please don’t be offended if I don’t respond to your message, or return your text or call. Thank you for your continued prayers, miracles are truly happening.

Update on Toby:

Today makes 1 week since his accident, lots of ups and downs. Lots of baby step progress, but also just a reminder of how far he has to go.

Physically, Toby is recovering well. He is breathing on his own, can sit up and walk with assistance, and can usually eat a few bites of soft food.

Cognitively, Toby is really struggling. Some days he says my name, but does not recognize me most of the time. Every day he says more words that give me hope that he’s going to come back to us, but he is incredibly lost and confused, and frustrated. Toby is so smart, and he knows something isn’t right.

With traumatic brain injuries, there is no set timeline for anything or any real answers. “Give him more time” is what I hear a lot. I just miss him.

Don’t stop praying, we have a long way to go.
