Big day at World City Brewing! The first section of our ICF walls was poured today, and everything went smoothly. No issues, no blowouts, just a great day of work by the crew.

Jeff from Blackhaus Construction takes you through the progress in this walkthrough. Tomorrow, the plan is to remove the interior bracing so work can begin on the interior building pad and the underground electrical and plumbing infrastructure.

Huge thanks to Jeff, Kyle from Blackhaus Construction and everyone who helped make today’s pour a success. Seeing these walls take shape makes this whole thing feel a little more real. Lots happening on site this week!

Here’s three weeks of progress at World City Brewing in about 42 seconds.

We began by rolling and compacting the building pad. During that work, we uncovered some of the old Richfield Family Restaurant footings beneath the site.

Once the pad was complete, the crew dug the new footing trenches. A rainstorm and inspection delay forced us to cover the trenches temporarily, but we passed inspection and got the footings poured.

From there, the ICF walls began going up while excavation started for the underground detention system that will serve the parking lot.

Three weeks ago, this was a cleared building pad. Today, about half of the wall structure is in place, and the shape of the brewery is finally becoming visible.

There’s still a long way to go, but the progress is exciting to watch.

Checked out Little Lit in Broadview Heights. Just stopped in for some cocktails, and they were solid. Next time will eat for sure. Love Literary Tavern in Tremont, and excited to have Little Lit nearby!

It is crazy to think that these styrofoam block will become to walls for World City Brewing. First run today, should have the first 5 feet of wall structure up tomorrow.

When Maggie and Fred first showed me their design for World City Brewing, I was blown away by what they had created.

We came to Young Design Studio with a long list of requirements and some firm constraints, including keeping the building’s footprint. They took all of that and created a modern, distinctive building with a concept behind it that I immediately loved. They saw possibilities I hadn’t imagined.

In Part Two of our visit, Maggie and Fred share the thinking behind the design, some of its unique elements and the challenges they worked through along the way.

Their creativity and thoughtful problem solving have shaped what World City will become. I’m excited for you to hear their perspective and see more of the work that made me so eager to build this place.

I often see people in our local Facebook groups asking for recommendations for their next project. That’s part of why I wanted to share these videos. When you find talented people you trust, you want others to know about them.

If you’re considering a project that could use an architect’s perspective, give Maggie, Fred and the team at Young Design Studio a call. I’m trusting them with World City, and I’d be happy to make the introduction.

World City Brewing is all about connections, and some of the most important ones so far have been with the people helping bring it to life.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be introducing you to a few of those partners. First up, Maggie and Fred from Young Design Studio in Lakewood.

I stopped by their office to give you a chance to meet them and hear a little about the studio and their work. They’ve been an important part of turning our ideas for World City into a place we can actually build, and I’m excited for you to get to know them.

In Part Two, we’ll take a closer look at the vision for the brewery and the thinking behind its interior and exterior design.

If you have a project in mind, take a look at Young Design Studio’s work and consider reaching out. I’m trusting them with World City, and I’m glad we connected. www.youngdesignstudio.com

A beautiful day to lay the foundation.

Today, we started pouring the footings for World City Brewing. After months of planning, preparing the site and working through all the details, seeing the pump truck and crew out there makes this milestone feel especially real.

There’s still a long way to go, but this is a big step toward the place we’ve been working so hard to build. We’re grateful to everyone helping bring it to life, and excited to share each step along the way.

One big step closer to opening day.

Construction vs. Mother Nature, Part Two.

After leaving you with a bit of a cliffhanger last night, I headed back to the construction site around 5:00 this morning to see how everything held up.

The tarps collected some water overnight, so the day started in the dark, bailing out the low spots and checking the footing trenches. It wasn’t exactly the morning we had planned, but it was the problem in front of us, so we handled it.

The good news came later in the day: we passed our inspection.

We’re going to let the site dry out over the weekend and plan to pour the footings on Monday. It may not be the schedule we originally wanted, but we’re moving forward.

Sometimes progress looks like freshly poured concrete. Sometimes it looks like a passed inspection, a few buckets of water and a new plan for Monday.

Today was another reminder that construction rarely goes exactly according to plan.

We were scheduled to pour the footings for World City Brewing, but the required inspection couldn’t be completed in time, so the pour had to move back one day. On paper, one day may not sound like much. When you have freshly excavated footing trenches and about a quarter inch of rain in the forecast, it can make a pretty significant difference.

Instead of pouring concrete, we spent the day covering the entire footing area with tarps to keep as much water out as possible overnight.

You can only control what you can control. For everything else, you find the best solution available and keep moving forward.

Now all we can do is hope Mother Nature goes easy on World City tonight, the tarps do their job and we can get these footings poured tomorrow.

I guess we’ll find out in the morning.

We’ve made some exciting progress at the World City Brewing construction site.

The proof rolling of the building pad is complete, and we’ve started receiving rebar and ICF block for the building itself. Over the next several days, the team will begin excavating the footers, installing the reinforcing steel and pouring the concrete. If everything stays on schedule, we could begin assembling the first five feet of the ICF walls as early as next week.

That means we’re getting very close to the point where this starts looking less like a construction site and more like an actual building.

And yes, I’m aware that I’m squinting through most of this video. My very light eyes and bright sunshine have apparently conspired to give me one extremely consistent on-camera expression.

Plenty more progress ahead. We’ll see you on the next one.
