Founders update 🍻

We’ve found two potential locations in the Richmond area for Two Detectives Brewing, which is very exciting and also feels suspiciously like progress.

Naturally, there’s a catch: zoning.

Because apparently starting a brewery involves a lot less “brewing beer” and a lot more “learning about things that have absolutely nothing to do with beer.”

Richmond is working through proposed zoning changes that could make things a lot easier for small breweries like ours, including both of the spots we’re currently looking at.

So for now, we’re watching the process closely, working through the red tape, and trying to keep this thing moving forward.

A lot happening behind the scenes. We’ll keep bringing you along for all of it. 🍺🔎

Back in my old stomping grounds 🍻

We stopped by Inbound BrewCo in Minneapolis’ North Loop, a brewery built inside a former recycling facility with a huge taproom and plenty of great beer.

But the one we had to investigate? Big Dill, their pickle sour. Pickle beers have become a surprisingly big craft beer trend, and when you think about it, a tart sour base is pretty much perfect for those salty, briny, dill flavors.

Case closed. 🕵️‍♂️🍺

Hardywood released their Oktoberfest and we’re all for it!🍻

Historically, Germany’s Oktoberfest runs from September into October. But as Oktoberfest-style beers have grown in popularity, breweries have started releasing them earlier and earlier, with plenty now showing up in August and even late July.

If Oktoberfest season keeps getting longer, you won’t hear us complaining. Prost! 🍺

I love when a brewery’s second location feels familiar, but gives you a completely different experience.

Swells’a Brewing nailed that with its Duck Dive Bar. It’s laid-back, creative, and feels more like an outdoor beer stop than a traditional taproom.

Same brand. Totally different vibe.

Definitely worth checking out next time you’re in Duck.

Beer Detective Recommendation 🕵️🍺

If you’ve never cracked open a Heady Topper, you’re missing one of the true legends of craft beer.

Widely regarded as one of the best hazy IPAs to come out of the Northeast, this 8% DIPA delivers huge tropical hop flavor with an unbelievably smooth finish.

Big Ugly Brewing has been on an absolute tear lately, taking home multiple medals at this year’s U.S. Open Beer Championship, so we had to make the trip to Chesapeake to check them out.

Great beer, a cool vibe, and another reminder of how many awesome breweries there are across Virginia.

Another fun week in the books. We toured two potential brewery locations and are getting closer to finding the right home for Two Detectives.

It also reminded us how special Richmond’s beer scene is. Hardywood, The Veil, Väsen, and Triple Crossing all have multiple locations right here in the same city. That’s rare, especially for a city Richmond’s size.

It makes us even more excited to build our brewery here.

Case File: Fulton Brewing x Rush

Rush needed an American brewery to produce their beer in the U.S., where they ended up choosing Fulton Brewing in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Cool enough on its own, but what stood out to us was how Fulton turned it into a taproom moment. Rush beer on draft, 2112 specials, and a simple reason for people to show up and be part of the story. That’s the kind of thing we love seeing. A good beer is one thing. A good beer with a reason to visit, talk about it, and remember it? That’s the case.

Back in San Antonio, just a few minutes from the Alamo, we stopped by Back Unturned Brewing. Solid beer, excellent pizza, and a menu that went beyond the usual brewery setup with micheladas, THC drinks, and a cocktail program that actually fit the local vibe.

Still a brewery at heart, but with a menu that made sense for San Antonio.
