Well, it finally happened. The part of the chicken journey that noone ever wants to come across.
We had our first chicken die on us. 😥

It was one of our newer hens only about 14 weeks old.
Not really sure what happened to her. We found her on the floor in the corner of the chicken coop last night.

There is also a second one (pictured) that I had to pull out this morning. She's lethargic, was getting attacked by the other chickens, has liquid pouring out of her mouth when you pick her up, and a swollen balloon feeling crop.

Syringe feeding some ACV and gonna get her on probiotics. She is isolated and resting. Fingers crossed she pulls through.

Everyone else is acting fine and not showing any signs of disease or stress.

How is our barn cat experience going you maybe wondering....

It's been a month for Melody now in the crate and it was time to let her free.
She did alot of going out and in from the stall to the outside of the barn.
Last time the camera went off was around 5am. She was not near the stall this morning for breakfastt though. All we can do is wait and see if she comes back.

Trying to "domesticate" feral cats is no easy thing and it doesn't always work out. We can't make her stay if she doesn't want to. Praying she comes back and knows that she will always have a warm bed, water, cat food and head scratches here with us.

Edit: as I was typing this out the camera went off and she came back!

This huge storm rolled in fast. Not sure if you can really tell from the video how fast it came in. Had to run out in the storm to fix the chicken coop and keep the rain from hitting them. Unfortunately the rain had already soaked the inside by the time I got in there, but I got it all tied down and covered. I'm sure they appreciated it.

So last year I planted sunflowers by our front gate. Tended to them, watered, fertilizer, everything..... And they grew ...

So last year I planted sunflowers by our front gate. Tended to them, watered, fertilizer, everything..... And they grew about a 7inches before dying.

Fast forward to this year. I did NOT plant sunflower seeds anywhere. What I did do was hang a bird feeder with bird seed on our porch over our empty flower beds. 😑 Didn't plant, didn't water, didn't fertilize..... Nothing and we get THIS!!!! They are taller than me at 5 '9.

Make that make sense. 🤦🏼‍♀️😩

What's been going on at SHA?

Well... We have 3 new members of our team.

The Princess Kitty Posse!

We recently adopted 3 barn cats. We got them through Castaways Pet Rescue and are happy to be able to give a home to cats that would not be a best fit living in someone's home and being a house cat.

We are still in our acclimataion phase, but so far they have been very sweet even though they are still very skittish.

Melody (named after Ariel's daughter) - Orange Tabby
Belle (Beauty & the Beast) - Calico pink nose
Cinderella (Cinderella) - Calico Black nose

Belle is actually the mother cat of Cinderella.

If you can't tell our daughter came up with the names. 😅

Alot of people get confused why his is name is Pepper.... He wasn't always as white as he is now. (picture of Pepper from 2007 and a picture of him 2026.) When Pepper came to Savannah over 20 years ago his brother had more white than him at the time and that is how they got the name Salt and Pepper.

Newly named Dora the Explorer did almost get drop kicked by Pepper though. 🤦🏼‍♀️ He just does not like other animals next to him while he's eating.
