Home brewing was first introduced to the Appalachian region by Scots Irish settlers in the early 18th century. White lightening, Mountain Dew, and it's most famous name, Moonshine has become nearly synonymous with the mountain regions of Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee, West Virginia, and North Carolina.

Its medicinal uses were popularized throughout the region, as home brews were the only type of alcohol available. Following the American Revolution in 1791, the Whiskey Excise Tax was introduced to pay off the debts of the war. This is when the illegal production of moonshining began as a way to avoid taxes. Moonshining continued and became even more prominent throughout rural regions during the Prohibition Era of the early 20th century.

The production of illegal distilling throughout the Appalachian region has contributed to the stereotypes of the area as a lawless and "backwards" place. Alternatively, moonshine distillation has been used for centuries as a means of economic survival and as a cultivator of local identity and cultural (or counter-cultural) production.

Filson's collection is home to a moonshine still as seen in the image! Learn more about Moonshining in Kentucky from a 1986 oral history project by the at UK Libraries. https://kentuckyoralhistory.org/ark:/16417/xt7kd50fxr0c
