⚠️ Public Service Announcement: Do NOT Buy a Highland Cow ⚠️
(A cautionary tale from people who definitely should’ve known better…)

It starts innocently.
You’re scrolling one evening, minding your own business, when you see it…
A fluffy.
Wind-blown.
Bang-wearing.
Caramel-colored Highland calf.
You say something casual like,
“Aw, that’s cute.”
That’s how it gets you.
Next thing you know, you’re “just going to look” at one in person. Strictly educational. Purely observational. You are strong. You are responsible. You are not impulsive.
Then it looks at you.
With the bangs.
And the nose.
And the tiny little hooves.
And suddenly you own a Highland.
But it’s fine. You only wanted one.
Except… Highlands don’t like being alone. So obviously you need a second one. For companionship. You’re basically a livestock humanitarian at this point.
Then you realize there are different colors.
Silver.
Brindle.
White.
Red.
Dunn.
Black.
Now it’s not a farm.
It’s a collection.
You start saying things like:
“We don’t have a silver yet.”
“She would pair beautifully with him.”
“This one has exceptional hair genetics.”
“It’s an investment.”
Your pasture is full. Your trailer is hooked up. Your friends stop asking questions.
You begin attending sales “just to watch.”
You do not just watch.
At some point you realize you don’t own cattle…
You own fluffy lawn ornaments with horns.
And you wouldn’t trade them for anything.
So please — let this be your warning.
Highland cattle are not livestock.
They are addictive.
They are a collector’s hobby disguised as a cow.
And once you start…
You will never, ever have enough.

Then and Now
Peckles… our big, worthless rooster. I was so excited to hatch him 2 years ago and add some serious color to our eggs, instead we ended up with a pet rooster. But we love him and all his silly way.

Tongue out Tuesday is Daisy’s thing!
She can smell a treat from a mile away. This is how she steals treats from friends and has been practicing this technique for years.

If you have goats, take them a bucket of warm water 2-3 times a day. (after feedings) it helps keep them hydrated and digest food. Add molasses or ACV for an extra boost. We have heated buckets but they don’t drink much cold water when it’s this cold and they need to stay hydrated to stay healthy!
Stay warm friends🥶

Truth

As we prepare for the freeze, everything feels a little heavier.

Not because it’s cold…but because so much depends on us. The animals. The water lines. The shelters we built with our own hands and our own hope. You walk the property slower, checking things twice, already knowing you’ll check them again before bed.

There’s a quiet worry that settles in your chest as the light fades. The kind you don’t talk about because only other farmers and homesteaders understand it. The kind that follows you inside, even when the house is warm and everyone else is asleep.

You lay there thinking about straw, wind, heaters, and tomorrow morning’s headcount. Loving this life means carrying that weight without complaint. It means responsibility doesn’t stop when the sun goes down.

And when morning comes, you step into the cold with your breath hanging in the air, listening before you look. Relief arrives in small moments…movement, sound, life.

As we prepare for the freeze, we do what we always do.
We worry. We prepare. We pray.
And we show up anyway
