Would I go back?

Would I go back? My name is Robert, and I decided to create a review page with a rating system that makes sense to me. This page is MY experiences.

I am tired of so many reviews giving half stars, or rating things out of 10 but never rating anything below a 6.

Category Scores:
🔹 Atmosphere – 5/5

🔹 The Food Itself – 5/5
🔹 Cleanliness & Maintenance – 4/5
🔹 Value for Price – 3/5
Total: 22/25

📝 Full Review:
We decided to hit this place up after church, so walking in, the place was PACKED. We had a 15-minute wait and thought, that's not too bad, but surprising for a diner. Maybe it was just the church crowd. Here's how it went!

Pricing:

Soda pop – $2.99

Orange Juice – $5.39

Fiancée: 2 eggs (meal) – $9.59 + one pancake – $5.49

Me: Swedish Connection – $12.49

Total after tax: $39.28
At the bottom of the receipt, in smaller text, was the real total with a credit card fee of $1.18, bringing it to $40.46.

🔹 1. Atmosphere – 5/5 Stars
• Lighting – 🌟
Typical mid-lighting, bright enough to see, but not blinding. Large windows all around. It was pleasant.
• Noise Level – 🌟
The space was large and open, but sound didn’t just collect. Even packed, I could easily hear my fiancée without being overwhelmed. A very pleasant audio experience.
• Décor & Ambience – 🌟
Small-town diner vibes, cute wooden café and utensils wall décor. Booths divided the room with glass panels on top, decorated with artsy floral swooshes. Pretty cute.
• Seating Comfort – 🌟
We sat at a table, it wasn’t wobbly, and my chair was solid. I wasn’t uncomfortable at all.
• Staff Presence – 🌟
The staff shined here. They were busy, but two different people were topping off coffee. Before our server even showed up, I had coffee which I appreciated! Our server was super nice despite the crowd, and even apologized (not needed, but thoughtful). Honestly, we didn’t have to wait long at all.

🔹 2. Food Presentation – 5/5 Stars
• Plate Size vs. Portion – 🌟
Not going to nitpick a diner for big plates with smaller portions. Everything fit on the plates and the table easily.
• Portion Amount – 🌟
Classic diner experience. I asked for 2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon, and 2 sausage links, and got exactly what I ordered. Pancakes were massive, in the good way.
• Food Plating – 🌟
Not sloppy, not fancy, just food on a plate, exactly what you expect at a diner.
• Silverware Presentation – 🌟
Wrapped in a disposable napkin, the classic diner style.
• Cleanliness of Utensils & Glassware – 🌟
Everything was spotless. No streaks or water spots.

🔹 3. The Food Itself – 5/5 Stars
• Sight – 🌟
Despite the crowd, the food looked great, not just thrown on the plate.
• Smell – 🌟
Nothing crazy, but the pancakes smelled incredible.
• Taste – 🌟
My over-easy eggs were a little cold, but everything else was fantastic. The pancakes (especially the buttermilk ones my fiancée got) were SO GOOD. I enjoyed my Swedish pancakes, but we ended up trading haha!
• Mouthfeel – 🌟
Everything cooked to order, no complaints.
• Satisfaction – 🌟
Typical diner food except for the pancakes, which were on another level. Dense but fluffy buttermilk pancakes, and thin, flavorful Swedish pancakes. Also, the pre-buttered toast was perfect, not too much butter, not too little.

🔹 4. Cleanliness & Maintenance – 4/5 Stars
• Table & Floor Cleanliness – 🌟
Table and floor were clean.
• Menu Condition – 😞
Not a big letdown, but the menu could be lighter in both physical weight and number of items. Typical diner overload. Also, some dirty/torn pages inserted into protective sleeves — I’ve seen better.
• Building Condition – 🌟
Solid. Nothing falling apart.
• Bathroom Condition – 🌟
It needed cleaning but it wasn't terrible, pretty typical with the rush they had. It was clean enough.
• Staff Hygiene – 🌟
Staff looked neat, clean, and professional.

🔹 5. Value for Price – 3/5 Stars
• Experience vs. Cost – 🌟
The small waiting area was a bit cramped, but the rest of the experience made up for it.
• Portion Size Relative to Price – 🌟
Pretty standard diner portions. No complaints.
• Ingredient Quality – 🌟
Nothing disappointed. Coffee was great. Pancakes alone made it worth it.
• Drink Pricing & Refills – 😞
$2.99 for soda is pretty typical. $5.39 for a large orange juice though, ouch. It tasted like Tropicana with pulp, but that price point hurt. I shouldnt be paying a dollar less than a full jug from the store for a glass of OJ. $4 would have been more acceptable.
• Unexpected Charges – 😞
The credit card fee is listed, but in very small print low on the menu. Easy to miss unless you hunt for it.

Final Thoughts:
Johnny Pamcakes is your typical diner — welcoming atmosphere, solid food, and fantastic coffee. You know exactly what you’re getting, but you’ll still be pleasantly surprised here.

The coffee was the best diner coffee I’ve had, smooth, bold, and fresh. (Granted, I went during a busy time so it didn’t have time to burn.)
Also, it was really nice to see Johnny himself on the line making sure orders went out quickly. Props.

I came here because it was listed as a must-see in Rockford. I agree. Having just moved here, I can safely say this place is very enjoyable and worth the wait if you have to.

Would I come back? Absolutely. I look forward to it.

How I Review Restaurants: A 5x5 Breakdown

When I visit a restaurant, I want to give it a fair and well-rounded review—beyond just "was the food good?" So I’ve built a simple 5-category system, each with 5 key elements, to keep things balanced, detailed, and honest.

Here’s how it works:

🔹 1. Atmosphere – 1 to 5 stars
This is all about the vibe and comfort of the place—the part you notice before the menu even hits the table.
• Lighting (too dim? harsh? cozy?)
• Noise level (background music, kitchen clatter, crowd noise)
• Décor and ambiance (theme, uniqueness, how it feels)
• Seating comfort (spacing, softness—not condition)
• Staff presence (friendly, attentive, welcoming—not hygiene)

🔹 2. Food Presentation – 1 to 5 stars
Looks matter! This rating is all about how your food and tableware are presented.
• Plate size vs. portion size
• Portion amount (are you getting enough?)
• Food plating (artful or sloppy?)
• Silverware presentation (wrapped, tossed, classy?)
• Cleanliness of glassware and utensils

🔹 3. The Food Itself – 1 to 5 stars
This covers the core sensory experience of eating.
• Sight (burnt edges, color, saucing)
• Smell (aroma, freshness)
• Taste (balance, seasoning, flavor depth)
• Mouthfeel (texture, temperature, greasiness)
• Satisfaction (did I look forward to the next bite?)

🔹 4. Cleanliness & Maintenance – 1 to 5 stars
Not glamorous, but crucial. This is about hygiene and the physical upkeep of the space.
• Table and floor cleanliness
• Bathroom condition
• Menu condition (sticky menus are a red flag)
• Building condition (walls, lights, floors)
• Staff hygiene (handwashing, gloves, etc.)

🔹 5. Value for Price – 1 to 5 stars
Finally, was it worth the money? Not just cheap or expensive—was the experience worth the cost?
• Overall experience vs. price
• Portion size relative to price
• Ingredient quality for the price
• Drink pricing and refill policy
• Sneaky upcharges (sides, sauces, etc.)

🔸 Tying It All Together
Each category—Atmosphere, Food Presentation, The Food Itself, Cleanliness & Maintenance, and Value for Price—is scored from 1 to 5 stars, giving a max of 25 possible points. I total the five scores and convert them into an overall rating out of 5 stars. This way, no single aspect outweighs the others, and a restaurant’s strengths (or weaknesses) are reflected fairly in the final score. It’s not just about taste—it’s about the whole experience.

To calculate the final score:
• Add up the scores from all five categories (max score of 25).
• Divide the total by 5 to get an average.
• Round to the nearest whole number to determine the overall score (e.g., 17/25 becomes 3 stars).
• No half scores or decimals—just clear and easy-to-understand ratings!

🍽️ Each category gets a score out of 5, and together they give a full picture of the place. This helps me be more objective, and helps others know exactly why a place is getting a great (or not-so-great) review.

📝 Full Review:
This place is what inspired me to finally create this review page. My fiancée and I went out to dinner and left with a lot of thoughts—and a high bill.

Here’s what we ordered:

2 Sodas – $2.99 each

Best of Flight (includes queso, guac, elote dip) – $14

Chicken fajita tacos – listed as $16, but we were charged $18

Rio Grande Bowl – listed at $16 with a $4 upcharge for chicken, but our bill showed $22

Subtotal: $59.98
Tax: $5.84
Total: $65.82 (before tip)

This review reflects my experience, not my fiancée’s, and I didn’t take pictures this time (we were starving). I’ll include food pics in future reviews. That said—the Loaded Patatas were awesome in my book.
🔹 1. Atmosphere – 4/5 Stars
• Lighting – 🌟
The lighting throughout the restaurant was solid—not too dim, not overly bright. It created a relaxed feel that didn’t distract from the dining experience.

• Noise Level – 😞
Here’s where the atmosphere struggled: the acoustics were rough. Sound bounced around the space, creating a level of noise that made it hard to hear my fiancée across the table. The place wasn’t packed, but without any soft materials or dividers to absorb sound, it quickly became loud and echoey.

• Décor & Ambience – 🌟
The décor was fine. It wasn’t anything special, but it didn’t feel cheap or neglected either. A bit of greenery—even some fake plants—would’ve helped visually and with the sound though.

• Seating Comfort – 🌟
Chairs and tables were in good shape. My seat wasn’t torn or sticky, and everything felt clean. Comfort-wise, I had no complaints.

• Staff Presence – 🌟
Our waiter was swift and engaged when necessary—overall a nice dude. He noticed my empty drink and chips and took care of both quickly. Friendly, didn’t hover or come by every five seconds.

🔹 2. Food Presentation – 5/5 Stars
• Plate Size vs. Portion – 🌟
The bowl my meal was served in fit the food nicely. It wasn’t overcrowded or too shallow—it gave the food room to be mixed.

• Portion Amount – 🌟
This place does not skimp on portions! Both of our meals came with large servings, and my side was a good size as well.

• Food Plating – 🌟
Most dishes were presented neatly, though nothing too flashy. The standout was the Loaded Patatas—they looked fantastic (and they were).

• Silverware Presentation – 🌟
Utensils were wrapped in a decent quality cloth napkin. That was nice.

• Cleanliness of Utensils & Glassware – 🌟
Everything was spotless. No streaks or water spots on glasses and utensils.

🔹 3. The Food Itself – 1/5 Stars
• Sight – 🌟
Visually, most dishes looked good. My Rio Grande bowl looked average—not bad, but not something that made you excited just by looking at it. My side dish (Loaded Patatas) looked super good and so did the Flight of dips

• Smell – 😞
This part was surprising in a bad way. The food had almost no smell. Even when the dishes hit the table, there wasn’t that usual inviting aroma. It was just... there. The lack of scent reflected the taste that followed.

• Taste – 😞
Bland. Truly underwhelming. My Rio bowl was a mix of muted flavors. The queso tasted like watered-down Alfredo sauce, the guacamole was ice-cold like it had been in the fridge (tasted good just COLD), and the chicken lacked seasoning entirely. Even the cilantro didn’t pop. The Elote dip and Loaded Patatas, however, were great. If those had been my full meal, this would be a much different review.

• Mouthfeel – 😞
The Rio bowl had one consistent texture—mush. Everything blended into a soft, squishy mix. No crunch, no variety. Even the chicken was overly soft, reminiscent of bagged pre-cooked fajita strips. A few crispy tortilla strips or fresh veggies could’ve saved it, but there was no contrast at all.

• Satisfaction – 😞
Despite the generous portion, the Rio bowl was a chore to eat. I didn’t look forward to each bite, and by the end I gave up as I just wanted to be done. A side dish should never outshine the main event.

🔹 4. Cleanliness & Maintenance – 4/4 Stars (Adjusted total – bathroom not used)
• Table & Floor Cleanliness – 🌟
Spotless. No crumbs or sticky residue on the table. The floors looked swept and well-kept.

• Menu Condition – 🌟
The menu was a clean, single-page design—easy to read and not overly cluttered. It felt fresh, not worn or greasy.

• Building Condition – 🌟
It was a little odd getting in—you enter a hallway, then access the restaurant from the middle of the building—but once inside, the place looked well-maintained.

• Staff Hygiene – 🌟
All the staff I saw looked neat and clean. It left a good impression.

🔹 5. Value for Price – 1/5 Stars
• Experience vs. Cost – 😞
For over $65 before tip, the experience didn’t deliver. Between the loud noise, bland food, and billing surprises, it didn’t feel worth it.

• Portion Size Relative to Price – 😞
Yes, you get a lot of food—but when that food isn’t enjoyable, it just feels like more of a struggle to get through. Bigger portions don’t fix bland taste.

• Ingredient Quality – 😞
Most ingredients felt basic. No bold flavors, nothing fresh or vibrant. The food didn’t reflect the pricing.

• Drink Pricing & Refills – 🌟
$2.99 per soda isn’t bad these days, and the refills were prompt. No complaints here.

• Unexpected Charges – 😞
The extra $2 added to both our entrées, without notice or menu mention, was the final disappointment. Transparency matters, and this left a bad taste in more ways than one.

Final Thoughts
Lucha Cantina has potential—it offers generous portions, a clean space, and solid presentation. But the food (the most important part) just didn’t deliver. Bland flavors, poor texture, and loud acoustics all combined for a letdown. I left full, but not satisfied.

Would I go back? Maybe—to just get a plate of Loaded Patatas. But for a full dinner? No. I honestly would have given it 2 stars but I wanted to give a full review of what we experienced.
