Chicken of the week: Cuddles!
Cuddles was our very first chicken of the week but it is her time to shine again! Cuddles is a leghorn! We thought she would be white but she ended up being a beautiful buff color with a little white here and there! So she is a Buff Leghorn. She is expected to be laying eggs soon (in the next month or two)! Leghorns are known for be great egg layers! Since her first appearance as chick of the week she has developed a beautiful red comb and fluffy plumage! We are happy to report she will also still allow you to cuddle! 🥰 She is a go with flow kinda gal. If one hen starts to run then Cuddles is running too! She is a lover not a fighter. She is rarely the reason for any ruffled feathers! We can't wait to report when she lays her first egg! Go Cuddles Go !!!!

Hollis wanted to share the sad news that 2 of our flock passed away today!
Sweet Wrenlee which was a beautiful Lavender Orpington and Nugget a Barred Rock have crossed over the chicken rainbow bridge!
They got killed by prey! To be honest by our own dogs. It is important to share this information because it helps us in the future and others know how dangerous it can be to let your guard down! It is hard knowing we let out flock down today! We love our dogs and our chickens and are trying to make a safe environment for both to live together. We are taking a step back and going back to our regiment we know works and will continue to improve our fencing and learning from this experience. Hollis has taken the loss very hard. He loves his chicks and he has having trouble forgiving our dogs tonight. We have explained everything and he knows the true blame lies on us. Life is hard sometimes.
Praying for a better tomorrow !
Hollis also wanted to add that the chickens have been given a proper burial.

Meet our chicken of the week: Tender
Tender is a Buff Orpington! Buff Orpingtons are a British breed known for being consistent egg layers and having a gentle/calm nature. They lay brown eggs and tend to live 5-8 years. They are great for kids to use in 4-H shows or county fairs because of their calm disposition. They are also known to have fluffy buff colored plumage. They are a dual purpose bird meaning they are good for eggs and meat! Tender is one of the youngest members of our flock and truly is a sweet bird! She is also super soft! Her tail feathers are just so FLUFFY I can't help but want to cuddle her.
Hollis wants to add that Tender was trampled by a big chicken when she was little and we thought she might not make it but she got special care here at Hollis' Hens and is now a big strong chicken!
