Have you ever heard your veterinarian talk about giving an injectable trace mineral shot? If so, has this left you wondering what the big deal is?
Trace minerals such as Copper, Selenium, Zinc, and Manganese are important for reproduction, growth, and optimal immune function. When animals are stressed, such as during calving, at weaning, transporting, feedlot receiving time, or breeding, their levels of these minerals decrease. By giving an injectable form of these trace minerals we are able to rapidly increase the trace mineral status of the cow.
An example of a time we like to use an injectable trace mineral product is around 30 days prior to calving, when we are boostering our scours vaccine in the cows. This is important because the unborn calf is completely reliant on its mother for trace minerals at this stage of life. Trace minerals are critical for fetal development and immune function after birth.
Another example would be giving a trace mineral injection during vaccination. This decreases the risk of disease in the herd by increasing the percentage of animals that develop antibody to the vaccine. The reasoning behind this is when modified live vaccines are given, trace minerals are pulled from the body because they play an active role in different pathways of the acquired immune response. By giving an injection of trace minerals at the time of vaccination, you are driving the immune response for better health.

Check out what we have to say about newborn calf health! ๐ฎ
โMany of us are in the midst of calving season, which is an exciting yet stressful time of year.
๐ Take a look at this month's Vet View article to see what you can do as a producer to reduce health risk in newborn calves. ๐

Did you know that approximately 1/3 of mortality in the first 3 weeks of life are attributable to failure of passive transfer? ๐ค
Failure of passive transfer is when the calf doesn't recieve the proper quality or quantity of colostrum to transfer the antibodies in the milk to the calf to be absorbed. Calves are different from other species in that they do not get antibodies transferred across their placenta while in utero, making proper colostrum intake very important. When a calf is first born, they have an "open gut" which allows them to to easily absorb the antibodies available to them in colostrum. But this "open gut" starts to rapidly shut down by 12-18 hours of life. For this reason it is extremely important to make sure the calf gets up and nurses within this window, the sooner the better. In some cases, colostrum replacement or supplementation is warrented. But remember, not all colostrum powders are made equally, consult your veterinarian! This is a critical part of long-term productivity and health of the animal. So moral of the story, colostrum is liquid gold!

This goat had a successful emergency surgery for a blocked urethra. On the left is Dr. Robinson hard at work during the operation and on the right is the post-surgery pic of the fully recovered goat.
This rare case has thrived since day one. This calf had an actual birth weight of 25 lbs and survived, thanks to the TLC of everyone involved.
Jordan Rydl, a student at Gilbert Middle School, shadowed us today for her Career Day. She was able to watch the IVF process and see an emergency hernia surgery. We had a great time hosting you, Jordan! Keep reaching for your goals!
Thanks to social media, this leg casting was a success! This newborn calf came in with a fractured right tibia after the mother inadvertently stepped on the calf.
