Elkins Farm and Garden

Elkins Farm and Garden I started this page to record my experiments/adventures in the land of urban agriculture. It is growing into a garden consutation business. I will be happy to advise, plan, install and maintain (or any combination thereof) your garden.

Yup, that’s garlic in the straw. I’m always nervous until I see those adorable sprouts poking out. Now we just have to wait til Marchish for the scapes (great for soups and stir fries and that sort of thing) and May/June for the harvest. So happy.

“Would ya look at the size of that chicken”Nothing fancy, just bulk garlic from the grocery store. Dang, I got lucky on the size of my seed cloves. If I get a dry spot today we’ll stick them in the ground. Only a week late, but it wouldn’t be me if I put my garlic in the ground on time. I’d hate to break a 15-16 year streak.

We’ll, it’s possible that I may be back in the business of telling people what I’m doing in the yard. I like to call it my micro farm. Broke ground today. Going to start small. This little plot here, a raised bed of garlic, and possibly a small popcorn plot if I can get enough distance. I’ll also probably do herbs in planters. We’ll just have to see.

The potted veggies did very well. The maters, taters, mint, lavender, and blackberry look just fine. The popcorn was laid over but it stood up nicely and the oregano and basil look to be alright after I popped them back in the pots.

We obviously had a pretty stiff storm last night while we were out of town last night. Went to Huntsville to the space museum for Pearce’s big ol’ #13. When we got home the basketball goal was across the driveway (didn’t take a pic of that) and the corn looks down for the count. The basil and oregano didn’t look so good either. Not sure if I’m going to try and save the corn or not. I only have today to figure it out.

Super Volunteers! These are sprouting from onions that sprouted from an onion we bought and never used. The original volunteers didn’t make it. Too many transplants. Well, I get another shot.

Does anyone out there know where a soul could get some perennial corn seeds?

How you turn the compost when the tractor runs out of gas.

Farmer Big had to have some fun, too. We’re consolidating the three barrels we brought from the old house.

Farmer Small’s not so small anymore. Pearce is turning the compost. He is over the moon at being able to drive the tractor.

From the scout to full on feeding frenzy. The Bee Gs (girls and guy) are trying a new feeding method. Seems the bees were hungry and needed a larger amount of food per feeding. It's not exactly how I want to use poultry waterers, but it is a wonderful idea. They can hold two gallons and that's a bit more than a mason jar.

The mad agriculturist has found his first project. We let this tomato hang around just a little too long, or should I say just long enough. These sprouts constitute the first tomatoes for the garden.

The long pieces from these pallets will be the lumber for framing the sides of the coop. I don't think I'll have enough slats to make safe sides for the coop though
