Ecstatic to be introducing Dolly, an A2A2 Guernsey who will be joining our Jersey girls!

This lovely lady will be part of our farms active efforts to bring back dairy farming to North Carolina. We are so excited to be introducing this breed more locally to Person County!

The guernsey is known for their kind nature and sweet milk flavor. Here at Flat Broke, we’re excited to be apart of the effort to

Let’s have a talk about ethical farming. When raising our own meats- whether it be beef, pork, chicken, or something else entirely- many don’t consider what goes into growing the meat itself. What you see in this post are roughly 35 cornish crosses that are coming into processing age.

They’re between 5-8 weeks and will be processed in the coming weeks. While they’ve been raised organically and GMO free, thats not what I’m most proud of in raising these guys. Compared to commercially raised birds, these guys are flat out HEALTHY. As a breed known for their quick growth rates, the Cornish Cross often experienced a multitude of health issues during the process. Poor mobility due to sudden weight gain, lack of feathering due to poor protein processing, and often heart failure as their hearts can’t keep up with the rapid growth.

While these guys will by feeding my family and friends for the next year, I still want them to be as happy and healthy as they can be in the process. Throughout the last few weeks, we have only lost TWO birds. Both losses occurred within the first 24 hours they were home. Keep the animal welfare in mind the next time you decide to hit the grocery store instead of at your local farms. I promise you, the “little guys” care a whole lot more about these guys than a CEO behind a desk.

Enjoy these little clip of the crew getting out of this North Carolina mud and keep an eye out for updates on how processing goes!

It’s my favorite time of year! These new kids are some of our future laying hens. Now that the weather is warmer, they’ve been out in the big coop getting used to their new flock!
