As a little girl growing up, I never imagined that one day Iโ€™d be writing about the life we live here at The Little Red Farmstead and sharing it with readers beyond our little corner of Appalachia.

Itโ€™s humbling and exciting all at the same time.

This journey of farming, homeschooling, preserving food, raising animals, and building our dream one step at a time has been filled with so many lessons, blessings, and stories worth telling. Iโ€™m grateful for the opportunity to share a small piece of that with others.

This Saturday, The Little Red Farmstead will be in two places at once!

Doug and Isaac will be at the Wytheville Farmers Market from 8 AMโ€“12 PM with a wonderful selection of our farm products.

Meanwhile, Iโ€™ll be spending the day at Rustic Roots Lavender Farm for their Pick Your Purple event from 11 AMโ€“5 PM.

Weโ€™ll have a selection of our canned goods available there, so if youโ€™ve been wanting to stock up on preserves, jellies, pickles, and other favorites, be sure to stop by!

This is such a fun family event. Not only will you be able to stroll through the beautiful lavender fields and pick your own lavender, but all of the adorable mini animals will be there too, including miniature cows, horses, and other farm favorites.

Weโ€™d love to see yโ€™all at one (or both!) locations this Saturday. Thank you for continuing to support small family farms and local makers, it means more than you know. ๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿด๐ŸŒพ

This summer is shaping up to be one weโ€™ll remember for a long timeโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ“’One of the articles I was invited to write will be appearing in an upcoming publication later this month, and I canโ€™t wait to share more details when Iโ€™m able. Sitting down to write about this life we love has been such an honor.

๐Ÿ’กWeโ€™ve also reached another milestone on our little country store. The electricity is officially finished! We found out this week that we were actually exempt from needing approval from the electrical inspector before AEP turns the power on, which wasnโ€™t what weโ€™d been told just a few weeks ago. But thatโ€™s farm life, isnโ€™t it? Things rarely go according to our plans, but Iโ€™ve learned time and time again that Godโ€™s timing is always better than our own.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธNow weโ€™re working on settling on an opening date. We want opening day to be more than just opening the doors, we want it to be a celebration. Weโ€™ve been talking with several local makers about demonstrations and family activities because we want folks to come spend the day and experience all the goodness our community has to offer.

๐Ÿ›๏ธWeโ€™re also thrilled to share that our products will soon be available at a new location in Wytheville. This is the very first wholesale order weโ€™ve ever received, and to say weโ€™re excited would be an understatement! Weโ€™ll let yโ€™all know where as soon as everything is stocked.

โ˜•๏ธA local coffee spot will soon be serving iced teas made with our Blue Ridge Blackberry Cobbler herbal fruit tea, and later this summer, one of our local restaurants will be featuring some of our pasture-raised meat birds in a beautiful farm-to-table dinner.

๐Ÿฅ—Weโ€™ve also partnered with a local farm that grows some of the prettiest pesticide-free heirloom produce youโ€™ve ever laid eyes on. Theyโ€™ll be supplying produce for our store, and weโ€™ll also be joining them for several local events in town alongside our regular farmers markets.

๐ŸชปOur sweet friendship and collaboration with Rustic Roots Lavender Farm in Abingdon continues to grow as well. Weโ€™ll be sharing details soon about their lavender festival, sunflower festival, and Christmas events. Weโ€™re also introducing several new edible products featuring their locally grown lavender, and I canโ€™t wait for yโ€™all to try them.

๐Ÿ‘ง๐ŸผAnd perhaps one of the things that excites us mostโ€ฆweโ€™ve been contacted by several school and homeschool groups about bringing field trips to the farm. Sharing this life with children and helping them connect with agriculture, animals, and the old ways is something very dear to our hearts.

Every summer, about the time the air gets so thick you could cut it with a butter knife and the chickens start spending more time stretched out under the shade tree than scratching in the yard, somebody will ask why the egg basket isnโ€™t as full.

Truth is, hens donโ€™t much care for this heat any more than we do.

When those hot Appalachian summer days roll in, a henโ€™s body shifts into keeping herself alive and comfortable. Sheโ€™ll eat less because digesting feed makes her hotter, drink more water, and spend her afternoons panting in the shade or dust bathing in a cool spot under a shade tree. All that energy sheโ€™d normally use for laying eggs gets redirected toward simply staying cool.

So if youโ€™ve noticed fewer eggs in your basket lately, donโ€™t be too worried. Your girls arenโ€™t being lazy. Theyโ€™re just trying to make it through another spell of mountain summer heat. Once those cooler mornings and crisp evenings start sneaking back into the hollers, youโ€™ll likely see those egg numbers pick right back up.

Until then, weโ€™re all doing about the same thing around hereโ€ฆfinding a shady spot, drinking something cold, and waiting on cooler days. ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿฅš๐ŸŒฟ

Have yโ€™all noticed your hens slowing down during hot summer days?

If youโ€™ve ever lived up in a small town, you know thereโ€™s just something deeply nostalgic about summer festivals.

After the farmers market this weekend, we loaded up and headed over to Chautauqua in Wytheville. We met up with some of our market friends, spread out our blankets and chairs in the park, and settled in for an evening of music with Emily Ann Roberts (Sasser House), who was sweet as pie.

I packed us a little picnic, pepper jelly with cream cheese and crackers, along with our prize-winning heirloom tomato salsa and chips. Nothing fancy, just good food shared with good people while the kiddos danced in the grass and the music drifted across the park.

The thing I love most about Chautauqua is that itโ€™s carrying on a tradition thatโ€™s been around for well over a hundred years. The original Chautauqua movement was created to bring music, learning, storytelling, and culture to rural communities tucked back in the mountains and countryside. Folks would gather together to hear speakers, listen to music, learn something new, and visit with neighbors. In a lot of ways, not much has changed.

Sitting there Saturday evening, watching children twirl barefoot in the grass while neighbors stopped to talk and laughter echoed through the park, I couldnโ€™t help but think about all the generations before us who gathered in much the same way.

Maybe thatโ€™s why small-town festivals feel so nostalgic.

They remind us of sticky fingers from snow cones, staying out past bedtime, fireflies blinking as the sun went down, and the simple joy of being together. I reckon we need a little more of that.

Some traditions are worth hanging onto. โค๏ธ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒ„

You ever come across a page that feels less like social media and more like pulling up a chair at somebodyโ€™s kitchen table to sit a spell?

The kind that reminds you of flour-dusted aprons and screen doors that never quite latch right. Of gardens planted by the moon signs, stories told while snapping green beans, and neighbors who still wave from the driverโ€™s seat of an old pickup.

The pages that donโ€™t leave you feeling hurried or worn out.

The ones that make you linger a little longer.

The ones that remind you that simple things still matter.

When I was 19, I was told I couldnโ€™t have children. Years later, I met my husband, Doug, and he never once wavered in believing that God would bless us with a son.

Today, watching him with Isaac, I know just how blessed we are.

Doug works tirelessly to provide for our family and often tells me heโ€™d work three jobs if it meant I could always stay home with our son. He supports every dream I have, celebrates every small victory, and carries the weight of our familyโ€™s needs without complaint. And his little mini-me, Isaac, absolutely adores him.

On this Fatherโ€™s Day, I want to say something to young women who are looking for a husband: donโ€™t put all your focus on money and looks.

Choose the man who is up with you at 3 a.m. when your child is sick.

Choose the man who works hard because he values his family.

Choose the man who helps build your dreams and makes them his own.

Choose the man who changes diapers without being asked, reads bedtime stories, and shows up for the little moments.

Choose the man who leads your family with faith, kindness, and integrity.

Choose the man who treats you with respect, because one day your children will learn what love looks like by watching the two of you.

Choose the man who isnโ€™t afraid to sacrifice for his family and who understands that being a father is about so much more than simply providing financially.

Choose the man who will love your children fiercely, pray over them faithfully, and remind them every day that they are deeply loved.

What a wonderful Dairy Day at the Wytheville Farmers Market! Dairy Day has always been one of my favorite days at the farmers market, and this yearโ€™s event certainly didnโ€™t disappoint. The community really showed up BIG today, and we are so grateful for everyone who came out to support local farmers and makers. We had so much fun visiting with familiar faces, meeting new customers, and enjoying all the festivities.

Of course, the free ice cream was a highlight, and we couldnโ€™t resist trying the butter caramel flavor!

One of the highlights of the day was seeing our Brown Sugar Apricot Preserves featured by our friends at Leaven Bakery on their Sweet & Salty Grilled Cheese. We absolutely love seeing local businesses support one another and create delicious offerings using products grown and made right here in our community.

While we were there, we also tried Leaven Bakeryโ€™s special - tomato pesto grilled cheese with fresh mozzarella, and yโ€™allโ€ฆ it was one of the best things Iโ€™ve eaten in a long time. It was so good that I had to go back for a second one to take home with me!

Days like today remind us why we love farmers markets so much. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth, shared kind words, supported small businesses, and helped make Dairy Day such a success. We are thankful to be part of such an amazing community. โค๏ธ
