Visit mid-americagarden.com for their catalog and for their gorgeous bearded Iris rhizomes! I got mine free because I ordered from them last year 😊

Stormy weather here in Indiana today! While under a tornado watch, things got crazy for a few minutes and I was very concerned. After hearing thuds on the rooftop and against the windows, it finally settled down enough I could look out the window and spotted a downed limb in my two year old Iris bed (it’s grassy already).

It cleared enough I felt safe running out to inspect the damage. Honestly, I think everything is fine, as it was a small diameter limb. It landed right over Maui Wowie, but seems to have missed the actual rhizomes. Great news, as that’s probably my most anticipated Iris in that bed. And I also checked to make sure Lovely Livvy escaped unscathed!

Life as a passionate Iris grower!!

Did you know there a dwarf bearded irises? These cuties, which come as miniature and standard dwarf varieties, are much shorter in height and bloom the earliest of all bearded irises. You can extend your bearded Iris bloom season by adding some of these dwarf varieties to your garden/landscape. They tend to bloom when your early spring flowers, such as tulips and daffodils, bloom.

These photos are mine that bloomed for the first time in spring 2025. I cannot remember all their names yet, but I’ve done my best to label what I can below the photos.

I rushed outside this morning, before the rains started again, just to look at my 2-year old Iris bed. This one showed some good growth, but I couldn’t remember what it should look like, as it hasn’t bloomed yet for me. I looked it up and this lovely Barry Blyth creation, ā€œShe’s Lovelyā€, is what I should expect!

This breathtakingly beautiful bearded Iris was my mother’s. I do not know it’s name, but that doesn’t matter. It moves me every time I see it in bloom. I brought a start of it to my house, but haven’t yet seen it in bloom.

What Iris farmer doesn’t love a new gadget to make planting and digging rhizomes just a bit easier?!?!

I got a new, smaller shovel with a handle long enough to give me some leverage. And I got a cushioned seat that fits on a standard 5 gallon bucket. It even swivels! It was on clearance at Rural King, so I don’t mind the camo designšŸ˜€
