Black food is a living, breathing timeline—rooted in legacy, built for the future.

Curated by Last Supper Society, Futureproof is a culinary time travel experience that kicks off the Hella Juneteenth Festival and opens Futureproof: Blueprints for Black Futures at the Oakland Museum of California—an immersive AI art installation where spoken visions of Black futures are transformed into visual artworks in real time.

Each course in this intimate dinner tells a story across time—from ancestral traditions to bold new expressions. In a moment that bridges past and possibility, Chef Mariya Moore-Russell—the history-making first Black woman to receive a Michelin star—joins a roster of visionary Black chefs, adding her voice to the evolving narrative of Black culinary legacy.

Because Black food isn’t just part of the past—it is Futureproof.

Introducing the fourth and final subject for 𝓗𝓪𝓷𝓭𝓼 𝓟𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓼𝓮: Francis Ang

“Kamayan is a communal style of dining which translates to using only your hands to eat.” We linked up with Chef Francis at Abaca, to do document his modern presentation of a kamayan feast.

‘Community’ was a word that was mentioned often as Francis and his team recounted memories of their upbringings - particularly how, as children, learning to share what was on the table was one of the first lessons learned.

When considering the idea of communal dining, this is the essence… and when using your hands your utensils, you tap into a deeper, more meaningful layer of experience.

Introducing the third subject for 𝓗𝓪𝓷𝓭𝓼 𝓟𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓼𝓮: Adiam Tsegaye

Whether welcoming a guest into your home or feeding a loved one, offering a Gursha (feeding someone by hand) symbolizes love, respect and gratitude.

Chef Adiam’s comforting energy seeps through the walls at her Mela Bistro. Her intention is unmistakeable - she wants you to feel at home and we feel that Brandon truly captured this feeling… almost as if you had just been offered a Gursha.

Introducing the second subject for 𝓗𝓪𝓷𝓭𝓼 𝓟𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓼𝓮: Reem Assil

For Chef Reem Assil, food is political. As an Arab woman, specifically a Palestinian-American, preserving the hand-eating traditions of her culture is an act of resistance in itself.

We joined Reem at her kitchen in San Francisco to discuss how protest can manifest on the plate. Our conversation served as a reminder that our hands hold so much power… and that using them to nourish ourselves is merely transfer of power - fueling us to fight on.

Introducing the first subject for 𝓗𝓪𝓷𝓭𝓼 𝓟𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓼𝓮: Sri Gopinathan

We spent some time with Chef Sri at Copra, discussing South Indian hand eating customs and documenting his presentation of a a traditional banana leaf meal called “sadhya”. Color, spice and vibrance are a few words that really resonated with us.

He taught us that, according to Ayurvedic teachings, when you touch your food with your hands, you are creating a physical and spiritual connection with it… being more present in the moment as a result.

As 2024 comes to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on yet another monumental year - a year full of triumphant highs and (as of recently) demoralizing lows . It really do be like that but maintaining balance when the landscape is constantly peak versus valley; finding harmony where there is conflict… is a subject worth exploring.

With that, we present our next exploration:

Through the lens of VERSUS, a multi-artist gallery show curated by at , that explores sports’ role in our lives, we offer a 6-course dining experience - a culinary expression of our quest to find “Balance in Conflict”.
