One of the questions we get asked most often is: Should you freeze your coffee beans?
The short answer is freezing can preserve coffee well, if it’s done correctly.
As a roaster, I often recommend storing your coffee in a cool, dark place and in an airtight container. Second, buy enough coffee to enjoy within 4 weeks for the best flavor.
Oxygen is the biggest enemy of flavor, keeping the beans whole is best. Ground coffee can lose aroma faster than beans. Unless traveling or camping, grind only what you need.
Freezing is especially nice when you buy a specialty coffee and want to preserve for a special occasion.
1) Beans should be vacuum sealed in an airtight container.
2) Freeze smaller portions.
3) The container should not be opened repeatedly while frozen, condensation can form when warm humid air enters.
4) Beans should be allowed to return to room temperature before opening the container.
Exposure to moisture and temperature swings are not good for the bean. Additionally, storing in the refrigerator presents with possible humidity and the refrigerator is full of odors that coffee can absorb.
