A turkey hen "Miss Tootles" has been taking her morning constitutional past my office every day. She leaves big footprints. Usually turkeys hang with a crowd, but she appreciates her alone time.

This little goldfinch and 50 of his friends are chirping "good morning" to you as they greet the day-dawn. They're sure cute.

Sometimes when I'm out walking, an alligator lizard will suddenly scurry for cover, and that makes me jump. I bet that's why they look like they're smiling all the time. heh heh heh - got her! Just now, a rabbit was hopping down the road and the lizards did the scurry-surprise, and the rabbit jumped up into the air. Glad I'm not the only one.

Today I gave oatmeal to the chickens. Pepper is low man on the totem pole. She couldn't get any for awhile, but then the rooster noticed and set some aside for her to eat. Good boy.

I was the speaker for the Calaveras/Tuolumne Master Gardeners today. When I was talking about wildlife considerations and showed a photo of deer along the road, a man in the front said, "where did you take that?" I told him the road, and he said it was his place. So - I just met my nice neighbors the Weinbrenners, and we've been here for five years. Sometimes in the country, when we have long lanes and gates, it takes awhile to get acquainted. --Allison

This would be a fun experiment. We have the ash, we just need the oil. Two parts lye to one part oil is the recipe, and it chemically changes to soap. Bubble, bubble, toil & trouble.

I love the learning curve when you get a new kind of animal. I can speak dog, goose, and cat fluently, but I am learning goat. They burp at each other when they're alarmed or disgusted. So I accidentally burped just after filling their feeder, and they all stopped and looked at me as if to say, "what's the matter yous?"

Next year our goats will be producing milk, and soap is the #1 destination for said milk. Can't wait!

Soap making is not as hard as you think. Although it might sound complicated, it’s a skill our ancestors took for granted.
