We planted Sunn Hemp again this year in all of our goat paddocks. These paddocks have a base of Bahia Grass, Aeschynomene and some Osceola Clover that is still hanging in there from our winter planting. We will rotate our goats from paddock to paddock every 10-14 days to insure they do not overgraze and to stay out in front of the worm cycle. The forage you see in the pictures below will be their only food source until the first frost this fall. Which last year didn't come until December.

Our Savannah buck (BHF Remington) purchased from the Chris Luton Meat Goat Company. I can't tell you how impressed we are with his 100% NZ Kiko cross kids. We bred him to daughters out of GHK Iron Horse, ECR Atlas and Keeper. We have about (25) on the ground with more on the way. Triples are the norm with several quads and births weights over 10lbs. We are really starting to think this cross is the future. Very excited to see those (90) day weaning weights.

I was going through some old pictures and found these and thought I would post them. What a great memory and wonderful day spent with (2) of our children picking blueberries. Just think we could have been out walking around a shopping mall or home watching TV (no thank you). I am so thankful for this little farm and the quality time spent as a family working it.

Earlier this week we had our 1st South Poll calf of 2014. But, more importantly it was the 1st calf born on our new Lake Picket property in East Orange County Florida. Our goal is to increase our South Poll herd to over 100 cows. We may not achieve that goal this year. But, if all goes well I think it is a sure thing for 2015.

We get lots of calls, emails and messages form people interested in purchasing our South Poll heifers. Unfortunately at this time we are not offering any for sale. As we are still trying to grow our herd. But, once we reach that magic number (100). We will start making them available for sale.

For those interested in purchasing our grass-fed/grass-finished beef. We will have another group of South Poll and South Poll/Low Line Angus steers ready for purchase later this summer. Please call, email or message to reserve one for your freezer.

We are hard at work here at Absher Farms getting our winter seed in the ground. But I wanted to take a minute to share two new time saving and efficient tools we are using this year. Both of which are making the job of prepping and seeding 305 acres a whole lot easier.

The 1st one is this new little JD 5101e tractor. We use it for harrowing pastures, towing a boom sprayer and pulling the 10' roller pictured with it. This little John Deere is incredibly fuel efficient, comfortable (air conditioning, SAT radio, bluetooth to iPhone, very comfy seat) and the perfect size for most any task with plenty of horsepower (101hp).

The 2nd is this new pasture roller. Which we have found is perfect for rolling in seed and fixing areas of pasture that wild hogs have rooted up.

In the past we would harrow our pastures teeth down. spread the seed and harrow again teeth up. This worked great for winter rye grass and other easy germinating seed. But, we found the harrow covered some of the seed to deep and drug it into straight lines across the pasture.

That has not been an issue with this new roller. We fill it with water (it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to fill) for added weight and we have found that it presses the seed into the ground at the perfect depth. But, most importantly right were it was spread and lays. And we are hoping this will result in a greater number of seed germinating and a better stand.

As for our winter forage. This year we are spreading the following on our cattle pastures:

20lbs per acre of gulf rye grass
40lbs per acre of Wren's Abruzzi and FL 401 cereal rye
5lbs per acre of Osceola clover

On our goat pastures we are spreading the rye and clover detailed above. But, we are adding the following:

Fenugreek
http://www.nodpa.com/ForageArticles/Fenugreek_Feb_2004.pdf

Lunch Radish

I'll post some pictures once we get a good stand and some goats and cattle grazing on it.

What are you planting this winter. Reply below and let us know. We would love to hear from you.

After weeks of negotiations I am happy to report that we just closed on a new 75 acre property located on the shores of beautiful Lake Pickett and a short 30 minute drive from downtown Orlando.

The Circle C Ranch was once part of a 3000 acre ranch and hunting camp owned by Harry P. Leu and friends. With more than 2200 feet on Lake Pickett and 60 acres of improved pasture. This new property will give us some desperately needed new grazing land where we hope to develop our new Mashona/Red Angus cross herd of cows.

The property was being marketed as a new neighborhood development site. With (6) one acre lake front homes and (49) internal. We purchased it to preserve it and maybe even build a home for our family here one day.
