What is LAMHA?
Miniature Herefords are typically marketed through private treaty sales rather than traditional sale barns, with the show cattle community representing an important market for the breed. The Louisiana Miniature Hereford Association (LAMHA) is working to strengthen that market by creating more opportunities and incentives for breeders and exhibitors across Louisiana.
Thus far in 2026, LAMHA has sponsored three shows where Miniature Hereford exhibitors can compete without being placed against full-sized cattle, with great prizes including buckles. We have also sponsored four new Louisiana-bred champion buckles at the State Fair of Louisiana to encourage and recognize specifically calves raised within our state. We were behind this year’s addition of the first-ever Miniature Hereford Steer show at the state fair. We want to push for more steers in the state, and in turn more market for Miniature Hereford beef.
Our goal is simple: more opportunities to show and more chances to win, and more promotion of Mini Herefords which directly equates to more demand for calves from Louisiana breeders.
Our efforts do extend beyond the show ring as well. Through sponsorships and community involvement, we are introducing more people to the advantages of Miniature Herefords. We aren’t just out there asking for donations. We are having real life conversations with veterinarians, extension agents, FFA teachers about the benefits of Miniature Herefords. We know these cattle are more than just cute pets. They are hardy, maternal, feed-efficient, and productive cattle that perform well in real-world situations. Their moderate frames contribute to excellent feed conversion, and their longevity and reproductive consistency make them valuable additions to breeding programs. Stocking rate is also higher for these cattle than larger breeds making them perfect for smaller acreage operations.
While a strong national breed association is important, state organizations are essential to growing the breed locally. We consider state breed organizations to be the “boots on the ground” for breeders. LAMHA is committed to being a voice for Miniature Herefords in Louisiana, creating opportunities, building connections, and developing new markets.
We encourage Louisiana breeders and exhibitors to join LAMHA and help us continue promoting this exceptional breed. By working together, we can strengthen the Miniature Hereford market, create new opportunities, and build a brighter future for the breed in Louisiana.
