Sean Trace grew up in Napa. He's watched it change for decades.
After our conversation this week he wrote something that stopped me:
"I don't think this episode is really about wine. I think it's about what happens when you refuse to let something you love become someone else's job."
That's it. That's 44 years in Conn Valley in one sentence.
The episode is live now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. Links in the comments.

It's live.

Sean Trace and I sat down for Barrels & Roots and talked about 43 years in Napa Valley, farming your own vines, and why the wine always tells the truth.

We also talked about a 1945 bottle my father gave me, and what it means to walk past shortcuts every single year.

I don't do many of these. This one felt right.

Two nights ago at The Blu Halo in St. Petersburg.

That barrel head on the wall belongs to Ghost Horse.

The owners have been to our cave in Napa. They know what these wines are about — and Thursday night they proved it.

Four courses. Ghost Horse Fantôme at the table.

One of the guests pulled me aside after the Fantôme and said it was up there with Screaming Eagle.

That's not something I say about my own wine.
But I'll remember hearing it.

One barrel a year. Twenty-two cases. Made entirely by hand from the same estate I've been farming for 43 years.

Thank you to The Blu Halo, Chef Dave, and everyone who joined us.

Tomorrow night. St. Petersburg, Florida.
Ghost Horse at Blu Halo.
25 people. One evening. The 2021 Fantôme Cabernet making its way to a table in Florida.
This is what Ghost Horse looks like when it travels — built through relationships built over 25 years.
If you've ever wondered what it takes to get Ghost Horse at your table — this is how it happens.

This is framed on my wall.

A 1965 airmail letter from Pearson's Liquor Annex in Washington DC — addressed to D.R. Anderson, D.D.S., Box 429, Gwinn, Michigan.

My father Gus.

A dentist in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, ordering First Growths and Grand Cru Burgundies by mail in 1965 — back when a case of First Growth cost less than $100. He got to know the owner of Zachys in New York. He'd fly his Mooney airplane to DC and New York, load up cases of the greatest wines in the world, and fly them home to a small town where nobody else was doing anything like this.

Look at the margins of that wine list. Those are his handwritten notes.

He knew exactly what he was doing.

Recently, I opened a 1945 Château Pichon Longueville he gave me in the early 1980s. Just Sarah and me, at home, on a quiet evening. She's always a special occasion.

Still big. Still rich. Still smooth after 80 years. A hint of fruit still present. The color held.

My father taught me that great wine is worth chasing across the country in a single-engine plane. Worth saving for no occasion in particular. Worth passing down along with everything else that matters.

Ghost Horse exists because of what he taught me.
250-300 cases a year. Made the way Gus would have understood — quietly, carefully, without compromise.

I still have the bottle.

Last week. Ginza. Club Fujise.

The closing evening of Ghost Horse's first visit to Japan.

Thirty people. Many of them Challenge Syndicate coin holders — collectors who have followed these wines for years from across Japan.

I started with the history of Ghost Horse. How it began. Why 250 cases. Why no distribution. Why the only way these wines find their way to a table like this is through 25 years of relationships.

Then the questions started. And kept going.
At some point I stopped presenting and started moving around the room — one on one with every person there. Teaching. Listening. Watching faces change when the wine opened up in the glass.

The atmosphere was light and electric at the same time. Semi formal but warm. By the end it felt less like an event and more like an evening with longtime friends.

After the main event the coin holders gathered in the VIP room. We opened the 2009 Treasury Syndicate Premonition Cabernet. Casual. Quiet. The kind of conversation that only happens at the end of a long extraordinary evening when everyone has finally let their guard down completely.

Three nights in Japan. Kanda. BaCChus. Club Fujise.

There we were — closing out an extraordinary week in one of the world's great cities, surrounded by people who sought these wines out from the other side of the world.

25 years of building something the right way leads somewhere.
This is where.

Last week I took the bullet train into the Japanese Alps.
Between Ghost Horse events in Tokyo, I needed to see vines.
43 years of farming doesn't take a vacation.
Nagano. Sandy soils. Sloping hillsides. Brand new Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines just beginning their life in the ground.
I spent the day walking the rows — checking for flowering and bloom, talking with the vineyard team about w**d control, erosion, sun exposure. Showed them photos from our estate in Conn Valley.
Two farmers. Two continents. Same fundamental questions.
I also had the privilege of meeting Toyoo Tamamura — founder of Villa d'Est Gardenfarm and Winery. A man who built something extraordinary in the Japanese Alps from the ground up.
I recognized that feeling immediately.
This is what Ghost Horse is built on — 43 years of asking the same questions in the vineyard, removing what doesn't belong, and letting the estate reveal what it's always been capable of.
The cave is open.

There's a restaurant in St. Petersburg, Florida with a Ghost Horse barrel head on the wall.

The owners have been to the cave in Napa. They understand what Ghost Horse is about.

On Friday June 26th we're joining them for an evening that rarely happens.

Ghost Horse Fantôme is produced in extremely limited quantities — one barrel a year, entirely by hand. It almost never appears at a public event.

June 26th is one of those rare evenings.
