HOW DO WE TEACH KIDS ABOUT PRIVACY, SECRETS, AND SAFETY WITHOUT MAKING THEM AFRAID?
As parents, we want our kids to know how to protect their own privacy, respect other people’s boundaries, and speak up when something doesn’t feel right.
But we also don’t want these conversations to leave them feeling worried or afraid.
So we came up with a little tip that we’ve found helpful for starting the conversation:
🕵️ TRY THE S.P.Y. TEST
S – Safe?
Does this secret keep someone safe, like a surprise birthday party or a family recipe? Or does it make someone feel scared, uncomfortable, or unsafe?
P – Private or Problem?
Is this simply someone’s private information, like a journal, password, or surprise gift? Or is it hiding something that could hurt someone or prevent them from getting help?
Y – Your Trusted Adult?
If you’re unsure, ask yourself: “Would it be okay to tell my trusted grown-up about this?” Safe secrets and private information can usually be shared with a trusted adult. If someone tells you never to tell a trusted grown-up, that’s a sign the secret may not be safe.
We like this because it gives kids something simple to remember when they’re faced with a situation they don’t quite know how to handle.
And it opens the door for a bigger conversation without making it feel like a big, scary lecture.
And that’s really what we try to do with Cooper Kits, too.
The projects and activities in each kit are carefully created and curated around a life-skill topic, giving families a natural way to open up conversations that can sometimes be difficult to start.
With Live & Let Spy, kids get to step into a spy mission, build a parabolic microphone, crack codes, and navigate a metallic ribbon laser course.
Along the way, those activities give parents opportunities to talk about privacy, boundaries, trust, secrets, and knowing when to speak up.
It’s not about turning playtime into a lesson.
It’s about creating a moment where the conversation can happen naturally.
Because sometimes, the easiest way to talk about big life lessons is to give kids something fun to do while you talk about them.
Save this one for later, and share it with another parent who might find it helpful. ❤️
