The Coach Smith Memorial Basketball Tournament was created in honor of long-time Salado Eagle fan, Coach U.G. Coach Smith came to Salado in the early 70’s from Los Angeles, CA to accept the Salado ISD Head Football/Athletic Director position. During his tenure, Coach Smith brought unbridled enthusiasm and passion to Eagle sports. After retiring, he returned to Salado as the owner of Salado Dairy Q

ueen. Coach Smith and his crew consisting of Darrell Street, Charles Schreiner and Jamie Bonner, were dogged fans of all sports involving Salado youth. No game was too far and no sport too small for Coach and his friends to attend and support. Coach Smith was an advocate of higher education. It was through his personal efforts that many Salado students not only attended college but graduated. Coach Smith would be pleased with the quality and scope of today’s Coach Smith Memorial Basketball tournament.
