Classical Goats

Classical Goats Classical Goats is based in Salem Oregon and breeds Dwarf Nigerians for dairy and pets.

The name "Classical Goats" is actually a reference to the music choice playing in the barn during kidding season.

I didn't realize it had been so long since I posted so here's a quick update: Sarah is currently deployed with the Oregon Guard but will be back late summer/early fall 2020 so Bill and Cari have been on full time "goat-duty." Classical Goats sponsored the 2019 Oregon State Fair Costume contest and will do so again in 2020, regardless if Sarah is home for it or not (unless it is cancelled due to COVID-19). We did have to cancel our spring visit to Willamette University for the Willamette Equestrian Club fundraiser but hope to join them again when students are back this fall. Remember to check out our friends at Gladdie Acres as well if you're considering this crazy ride called owning goats.

Classical Goats is proud to be sponsoring the Oregon State Fair All-breed goat costume contest this year. We sponsored it last year as well but it was only open to dairy goats. This year they've opened it to all goat breeds that are exhibiting at the Oregon State Fair.

Folly's first-freshening udder (about 15 minutes before kidding). Since I'm not planning on showing her this year she'll dam-raise her twins. Depending on her udder development I might show her next year. But the primary goal was to show improvement over her mother's udder and that's definitely happened.

I didn't realize how long it had been since I'd updated. . .I'm currently in Afghanistan but my father is keeping up with the goats and cheesemaking while I am gone. We have some exciting crosses planned for this spring and summer and hopefully a great show season as well.

Penny kidded earlier this evening, which meant she was about a week early. . .but the kids (1 doe, 1 buck) seem healthy and are nursing well. We are happy to add Ravel (as in Maurice Ravel, the classical composer) and Camille (as in Camille Saint-Saens, another classical composer) to our herd. They join Lena's new classical composer name-inspired kids Telemann (Georg Telemann) and Borodin (Alexander Borodin) who were born July 24th.

Roo kidded on Saturday, 11 May 2013 (the day before I left for two weeks in Virginia) with a buckling and doeling. Their sire is GCH Copper Penny MTB Money to Burn. Her daughter will be Classical's MTB CPTs Necessity (barn name, Honor). The little boy will be called Banjo and will most likely be wethered. . .but we have a few weeks left to make the final decision on that. I will try to get some photos up after I get back from Virginia.

After weeks of stressing about Lena kidding (she was getting SO big) and setting up a camera in her stall so we could monitor her at night, I got a text at work today (yes, sadly, I have a day job). She kidded on her own with a buck and a doe. Everyone is doing well, which is a huge relief.

I was in the barn yesterday trying to decide where I wanted to put the camera because Roo and Lena were due soon. All the sudden Roo started yelling and within five minutes the first kid (a boy) had arrived. About five minutes later he was joined by his litter sister. Two new adorable kids for Classical Goats.

While it's nice to have some rain, I wanted to finish repainting my barn this week (it's fairly small so I try to do it every year). I'm covering all last years lavender paint with gray. I pick up a free 5 gallon bucket from the recycle center so it'll be interesting to see what color I get handed next year.

Burnice and two of her three kids came home with us today. While she still belongs to Gladdie Acres until September, this will allow her to start bonding with us and her future herd-mates.

Back from Iowa and starting to get ready for kiddings. The first batch should be end of June when Lena and Roo kid. I haven't confirmed by testing but I am pretty sure Penny isn't pregnant.
