We were honored to receive this award. Thank you Livingston County Conservation District!
The Livingston County Conservation District recently presented the 2025 Master Conservationist Award to Adam Barnes. Adam is not only Livingston County's University of Kentucky Extension Agent, but he also operates Barnes Farm and Milling Company with his family.
Adam is a member of the Organic Association of Kentucky (OAK) and farms around 400 acres of certified organic crops. He grows organic soybeans and yellow corn for the organic feed market and organic Ohio blue and red corn that he mills into corn meal and grits. He owns two stone mills that he uses in his operation. Adam has recently begun to grow ancient grain wheat (Einhorn, Emmer, Spelt, and Red Wheat) for sale as wheat flour.
In addition to the grain and milling operation, Adam runs a cow/calf operation with his father, Phillip, backgrounding calves, a small hog operation where he finishes them on overflow specialty corn and sells freezer hogs to friends and family, and he also has 12 hives and sells honey.
Adam is an advocate for cover crops, utilizing rye and harvesting in spring. He has begun to experiment with hairy vetech as well. He is interested in getting solar waterers to help with this cattle operation. He worked closely with OAK during the 3 year transition to organic period and maintains membership in this organization.
Barnes Farm and Milling Company sells cornmeal and grits in 19 grocery stores and shops in both Kentucky and Tennessee, also at the Nashville Farmers Market, and also has a strong online presence, selling products all over the United States including Hawaii. He is expanding into other value-added products including hush puppy and cornbread mixes.
Adam and his wife, Leslea run a diverse operation and continues to find innovative ways of marketing what he produces. In addition to his family, Adam credits OAK, Ohio Valley Grain Exchange, UK Cooperative Extension and the Conservation District in helping him build a multi-faceted operation.
The Livingston County Conservation District is proud to present Adam Barnes with the Master Conservationist Award!
