The Eye in the Sky (While the Humans Get Their Own Free-Range Time)

You know you’ve fully committed to the homestead life when you go on vacation, but instead of scrolling through pictures of the day's adventures, you’re staring at a smart dashboard calculating the exact humidity of a turkey coop in Oklahoma.

Farm Girl and I managed to slip away for a quick trip a week or so ago, but thanks to the wonders of modern technology—and some absolutely saintly neighbors—the CSTA Farm didn’t miss a beat. Honestly, looking at this command center, I’m starting to think the birds prefer us when we’re thousands of miles away.

While we were gone, our amazing neighbors made sure the 24-hour buffet stayed stocked and the egg collection went flawlessly.

We might have the master control panel, but the truth is, we just work here. The birds run the joint, the neighbors are a Godsend, and the Big Boss upstairs keeps it all spinning.

"The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good."

Mother's Day: The 'Loca' Love of a Super-Mom

It’s a story of unexpected motherhood! Meet 'Loca.' Let's just say she's... well, 'free-spirited.' For a long time, she was fiercely broody, protecting a whole lot of nothing but anticipation.

Meanwhile, a neighbor's chicks were left motherless. Our brilliant farm girl and her friend put two and two together, and as this video shows, the match was perfect. The wild one became the protective one.

It’s a beautiful reminder that motherhood isn't about blood; it's about the heart.

To all the moms, grandmas, aunties, and spiritual mamas—the ones who stepped in and chose to love—we celebrate you today!

"God sets the solitary in families; He brings out those who are bound into prosperity..." (Psalm 68:6)

You see two adorable, speckled cotton balls. We see the final stage of "Project: Tick-Slayer Gen 3."

These new Guinea Fowl are currently marinating in 93.6 degrees of raw potential. Yes, they look cute and fuzzy now. That’s how they get you. But give them a few weeks, and they’ll develop that characteristic Guinea frantic energy and start patrolling your property like a feathered swat team that drank too much coffee.

Our resident Farm Girl is hand-raising these, so they might actually tolerate humans for five seconds before running away screaming.

The catch? We don't have enough bugs left for them to eat. Our existing Guinea Gang is so effective that ticks, small snakes, and other various bugs are basically urban legends around here now.

We can't keep them all, or the property will exceed our bird noise tolerance limits by July. So, these specialized security contractors (and all their brother/sister soon to hatch) need new jurisdictions.

If you’re in Sallisaw, OK (or willing to drive) and need more into on some low-cost, high-volume biological pest control (and a high-octane morning alarm), DM us.

Our pre-storm 'CSTA Farm Lock-Down' protocol is in full effect: feeders full to the brim (mostly to keep them occupied), windows closed, cameras and smart-lights verified (so we can keep watch on their jail-bird cliques from the house), and eggs collected before they turned into muddy marbles.

And the birds? It will be absolute chaos in the coops. It’ll be like CSTA Farm Bird Penitentiary in there. The chickens will form little turf-war cliques, the guinea fowl will hole up on a high roost like a paranoid SWAT team, and they will all just decide to eat… a lot. Apparently, lock-down anxiety fuels the buffet.

But jokes aside, we are safe in the care of our Lord and are incredibly grateful for God’s continued hand of protection over our animals, farm, and home. Our hearts and prayers are with everyone effected by the devastating tornado in Enid, OK. We are holding tight to the truth of Scripture in times like these.

Psalm 55:16 says "I will call to God, and the Lord will save me."

The Great Workshop Sabbatical of 2026

Meet Gabby. She’s called Gabby because she has a 5-star rating on Yelp for "Most Consistent Complainer." Whether it’s the "freedom door" not opening at the crack of dawn or the scratch-to-corn ratio being slightly off, she’s got a monologue ready for us every morning.

However, Gabby recently took a vow of silence. Unintentionally.

She decided to pull a "Mission Impossible" and snuck into the workshop for a nap right before we left town. Five days. No room service. No scratch. Just Gabby, some power tools, and her own thoughts. We came home to a chicken who was very happy to see the sun, a little thirsty, and surprisingly, she’d left us a few eggs on the workbench as if to say, "I stayed here, I might as well contribute to the mortgage."

She hasn’t been back to the shop since. Apparently, she’s decided she prefers free-ranging over "industrial living."

It’s funny how we think we know exactly where we’re going—until we end up locked in a room with no way out. We might lose our way, but thankfully, we aren’t the ones in charge of the map.

"I will instruct you and show you the way to go; with my eye on you, I will give counsel." — Psalms 32:8

Gabby might have been out of our sight for a few days, but we are never out of His. He kept His loving eye on us always—even when we wander into places we shouldn't.

Everyone knows the old saying, "April showers bring May flowers." It’s a real polite, dainty little rhyme. But in Sallisaw, we don’t really do "dainty."

Around here, an April shower usually involves a thunderstorm so loud it sounds like the clouds are moving furniture. It’s less of a "gentle watering" and more of a full-scale, high-pressure, atmospheric car wash. You’re lying in bed at 2:00 AM, the weather alert radio goes off, and you’re just thinking, "Well, the garden is definitely getting a drink."

But you wake up the next morning to this view. The air is clear, trees are full, chickens are out, and the grass is suddenly that aggressive shade of Oklahoma green that looks like it was edited with a neon highlighter. It’s loud, it’s flashy, and it’s a bit dramatic—but it’s how He brings the whole place back to life.

Psalm 65:9-10
"You visit the earth and water it abundantly; you make it very rich... you drench its furrows and level its ridges. You soften it with showers and bless its growth."

Look at who’s checking into the CSTA Farm “day spa” this week! 🦆✨

The Canadian Geese have decided our pond and pasture are the it spot. While our guineas initially tried their best “get off my lawn” routine, they’ve reluctantly accepted that these guys are staying for a bit.

But why exactly are they here in late March? Well, it’s not just for the excellent mud baths (though that helps). It’s peak time for their massive spring migration northward. 🗺️ Some of them are just using us as a posh rest stop to refuel on grass.

However, a lot of them aren’t just passing through anymore—they’ve become savvy year-round residents. Those guys are busy pairing up (and yes, they are dramatic about it!) and aggressively scouting the best nesting spots near the water. Our pond is basically a five-star location: lots of grass, open water for safety, and very gentle banks. If they stay more than a few days, we might have to add a goose to our logo! 🤷‍♂️

👑 The Chief Executive Clucker: Meet CC (a.k.a. Community Chest)

Forget the "Pecking Order." At CSTA Farm, we work with a strict corporate structure.

Introducing CC, our undisputed Head Rooster and the true "CEO of Poultry Operations."

His name isn't just a nod to our Monopoly naming theme (joining his brother, Chance); it's an indication of his role. CC is all about business. He doesn't just crow; he conducts all-staff briefings.

Here’s the breakdown of CC's leadership style:

Strict Delegation: He knows his value. He doesn't personally stand guard. Instead, he assigns protection duties to the other roosters. He expects reports. (Do we have that TPS report on the neighborhood hawk yet, Winston?)

Healthy Boundaries: CC isn't "mean" to humans, and he’s certainly not "afraid." He just maintains a calculated, professional distance. No photo ops for him; he’s far too important. (He may have a non-disclosure agreement).

The Ultimate Provider: While he might delegate the dirty work, he has one specialty: finding the absolute best buffets. His absolute favorite hobby is locating prime bugs and then "calling the girls over" to feast. That's a true leader.

In all things, his authority is clear and orderly.

"The Lord by wisdom founded the earth, by understanding He established the heavens." — Proverbs 3:19

🐔 The little Prince of CSTA Farm is Moving Out!

This little guy has quite the origin story. He started as a "wild" egg hidden in the brush, was hatched by a determined mama hen, and then finished his education under the watchful eye of his human mom.

This was his very first day of free-ranging, and as you can see by the look on his face, he’s already checking the property and 'what a great, big, beautiful world this is."

He’s officially graduating to be CEO of a new flock very soon. It’s a big world out there, little Roo. Don't let the spurs go to your head.

"The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord." — Proverbs 16:33
