Five-year-old Ronnie Cockroft went to a Cats Protection centre with his mother to find a new cat.

Then he looked into one of the pens and froze. Inside was Phoenix, his beloved cat who had disappeared 18 months earlier. Ronnie recognized him immediately and burst into tears of joy.

Shelter staff checked Phoenix's microchip and confirmed it really was the family's missing cat. They had been unable to contact the family earlier because the address on the chip hadn't been updated after they moved.

Ronnie had gone to the shelter hoping to bring home a new friend.

Instead, he found his old best friend waiting for him.

If you are involved with any local sports leagues, school events, community fundraisers, or businesses in the Southeastern Connecticut area, I would love to introduce myself!

I’m Macc, owner of Macc's Bites—your local mobile pop-up food vendor. You might have seen us out at the Groton Farmers' Market, but we do so much more than weekly markets! We are fully permitted through the Ledge Light Health District and carry complete commercial liability insurance, making it super easy to bring us out to just about any venue.

🍔 What We Serve:

• Hot off the griddle: Fresh, juicy burgers and hot dogs

• Classic Concessions: Freshly popped popcorn, cotton candy, chips, and cold drinks

• Scratch-Made Sweet Treats: Homemade cookies, brownies, dipped pretzels, and crowd-favorite dipped Oreos (plus fun custom colors and themes!)

• Plus fun and creative seasonal or event specific themes!

🎪 Total Setup Flexibility:

We adapt seamlessly to your space! We can set up outdoors or indoors, and we can operate with or without our 10x10 canopy tent frame depending on what fits your venue best.

• Sports Games & Tournaments: Keep spectators and players fed on weekends (individual sales—no cost to the league!)

• Local Businesses & Offices: Staff appreciation lunches, client events, or open houses

• School & Community Functions: Fall festivals, PTO events, open houses, and fundraisers

• Booking Options: We can do an open individual-sales layout where guests buy directly from us, or a flat-rate hosted/catering model where you treat your group.

During widespread heat waves in July 2026, photos and videos began appearing across Chinese social media showing cats stretched across huge winter melons and dogs resting against them.

Winter melon, also called wax gourd, contains around 95% water. Because water warms slowly, a large melon can remain cool to the touch for a while, giving pets an unusual resting surface that needs no electricity.

Grocery companies quickly noticed the trend. Dingdong Maicai began advertising mini winter melons with pet-themed messages and reported a 59% rise in sales from the previous week. Freshippo said mini-melon sales increased 77% after it started using pictures of cats in its advertising.

The melons may provide a little comfort, but they are not a replacement for proper protection from extreme heat. Pets still need fresh water, shade, ventilation and a cool indoor space.

It looks strange, but many cats and dogs seemed perfectly willing to use a giant vegetable as their summer pillow.
