For everyone who messaged me asking how to apply as a teacher in the United States 🇺🇸🍎
If you are seriously planning to teach in the U.S., several pathways can help you begin your journey through the J-1 Teacher Exchange Visitor Program.
Here are three ways to start your application:
1. DIY Application
You can independently research job opportunities, state requirements, and the application process.
2. Apply Through a Placement Agency
Some agencies assist international teachers with job placement and the visa sponsorship process.
3. Apply Directly to a Designated J-1 Visa Sponsor
You can search for and apply directly to an authorized J-1 Teacher Program sponsor.
My J-1 visa sponsor is J1X Visa Exchanges.
You may also need to have your educational credentials evaluated by a recognized credential-evaluation organization, such as WES or SpanTran. The accepted provider will depend on the requirements of your target state, school, or sponsor.
The regular J-1 Teacher Program generally lasts three years, with the possibility of a one- or two-year extension if approved by the sponsor and the U.S. Department of State through J1X Visa Exchanges.
It is also important to research your possible options after completing the J-1 program. Other immigration pathways are not automatic and will depend on your individual circumstances and eligibility.
If teaching in the United States is truly your goal, start early, prepare your credentials, research your target state’s requirements, and carefully choose the pathway that is right for you.
Good luck, future U.S. teachers! 🍎🇺🇸
