Texas has plenty of rooftops, warehouses, shopping centers, and acres upon acres of parking lots.

What we don’t have is an endless supply of productive farmland. 🌾

Once a working field is covered, paved, or taken out of agricultural use, getting that land back isn’t simple. Every acre matters—not just for farmers and families, but for the rural landscapes and open spaces that help make Texas feel like Texas.

That doesn’t mean Texas has to be against solar energy.

It means we should be smart about where we put it.

If solar panels can go over giant parking lots, on warehouse roofs, or on other already-developed spaces, why should productive farmland be the first place we sacrifice?

Imagine pulling into H-E-B, Buc-ee’s, or another shopping center and parking under a solar canopy while those panels generate electricity above you. One piece of developed land doing two jobs.

Our farms grow food. They support families. They preserve ranches, barns, fence lines, fields, and the wide-open views that generations have known.

Parking lots already take up valuable space.

Let’s make them work twice as hard.

Protect the farms. Protect the open land. Build smart energy where development already exists. 🌾🤠☀️🇺🇸

In 1950, a man named Harmon Dobson stood on a Corpus Christi street corner with a simple idea and an enormous hamburger 🍔. His burger was so big it took two hands to hold, and he wanted to charge 25 cents for it at a time when most fast food burgers cost a nickel. He opened a small walk-up stand on Ayers Street and called it Whataburger, reportedly because he wanted people to say "What a burger!" when they got their first look at it.

The gamble paid off. Texans loved it. A second location opened in Corpus Christi, then a third, and the orange-and-white striped A-frame buildings started appearing across South Texas and beyond. 🧡 For decades Whataburger remained intensely regional, a Texas institution rather than a national chain, and that regional loyalty became part of what made the brand so beloved. The patties were never frozen. The buns were always toasted. The jalapeños were always an option.

Whataburger has grown into a 900-location chain, but ask any Texan what it means to them and you will hear something closer to civic pride than fast food preference. It is the breakfast taquito on a road trip and the late-night burger after a football game. What is your Whataburger order?
