"A River Runs Through It" was the theme of our garden arrangement requested for the registration table at the California Garden Club Inc. (CGCI) state convention in Mission Valley. The crystal rocks simulate water flowing, with natural vegetation hugging the river banks.
How apropos was the chosen theme!!! The SD River Center at Grant Park has been chosen as the President's project for the CGCI. In keeping with our mission to give back to the community, The MHGC has contributed! We look forward to a sensory garden, interactive exhibits, and are excited to see this park come to life!

June is almost here which means it’s time to turn over those winter/spring beds to make room for summer crops! Did you know? The City of San Diego through the Miramar Greenery offers excellent quality #compost and #mulch to San Diego residents for FREE!

San Diego residents just simply need to provide an ID, electricity bill, or otherwise showing SD residence to the greenery’s front gate and can haul 2 cubic yards of each (compost and/or mulch) for absolutely free. This service is provided in efforts to divert waste from the landfill and close the loop with landscaping/garden and food waste. Check out the greenery’s website to check out all of the stats and extensive testing and results they provide on the makeup of their compost and quality of same.

Today’s seminar on Native Solo Bees was fantastic! Candace of SoloBee taught us all about the 500+ species of native bees that are semi-social and/or solitary that could use our help in establishing safe shelters to reproduce within our gardens. Native bees, while they don’t produce honey, are HUGE when it comes to pollinating crops and ornamental flowers, live on average 6-8 weeks (the females), and can create about 35 offspring during this time period. Providing shelter for these bees close to the flowers in your garden beds cuts down on the time they spend during their short lifespan of traveling between the flowers and their shelter where they will lay their eggs. Check out @solobee_shelter to learn more about the fascinating world of #nativebees and how she partners with @taylorguitars to create these #beeshelters out of mahogany blocks!

We had a wonderful time this morning learning about native bees with Candace of SoloBee, enjoying beautiful springtime weather outside at Mission Hills Nursery. We learned that while there are only 7 types of honey bees, there are over 500 species of native bees in California, many of whom are solitary or non-social bees. Candace spoke with us about the importance of creating shelter for #solitarybees in our gardens in order to keep the rich variety of #pollinator bees healthy and happy. A big thank you to Mission Hills Nursery for hosting us!

Interested in learning more about creating a welcoming environment for #bees within your garden? Join us on Saturday, April 23rd from 9:00 - 10:30 AM at the Mission Hills Nursery to hear from Candace Vanderhoff, Owner SoloBee Native Bee Shelters.

Register via our website to attend: https://www.missionhillsgardenclub.org/event-4580467

Members attend for free, Non-Members for $5. This seminar is a great one to bring kiddos to! We hope to see you there.

Candace is an environmentalist and an architect. In 2015 she founded Solobee to offer a native bee shelter that is handmade, beautiful and mimics a nest site like the ones native bees are searching for in nature. She uses salvaged wood from fences, deck and waste mahogany from Taylor Guitars. Her presentation will cover the lifecycle of solitary bees, how to help them thrive and the installation and maintenance of a native bee shelter.

San Diego has over 700 species of solitary native bees, many living in a backyard and providing pollination for flowers, fruit and trees. Bee shelters will be available to purchase at the event.

We had a wonderful time learning about all of the beautiful, low water, poor soil compatible plants that can be planted intermingled with #succulents last night at our March meeting with Living Designs by Linda. Linda has such great ideas for designing a landscape that’s beautifully colorful in the winter, as well as summer, in a way that works for our climate in #zone10 without requiring much regular pruning or water.

Check out our YouTube channel for the recorded session and shoot us an email if you’d like the list of 40+ plants Linda outlined in her presentation, listed with both their botanical names and common names.

Our next seminar, Bees in Our Garden, will be on Saturday, April 23rd from 9:00 - 10:30 at the @missionhillsnursery. Sign up to attend this seminar on our website. We hope to see you there!
