A rain tank installed through the City of San Diego's new Rain Tank Voucher Program!

CatchingH2O recently delivered and helped install a 205-gallon rain tank in the City Heights neighborhood. This is the smallest rain tank we offer, making it a perfect fit for smaller homes and roof areas. In this case, the home's 250-square-foot roof can collect approximately 150 gallons of water from just one inch of rain, meaning a storm delivering only 1.35 inches of rainfall can completely fill the tank.

But the benefits go beyond water storage. The property's roof runoff and new front-yard hardscaping were causing erosion along pathways and through the garden due to the site's natural slope. By capturing rainwater in a tank and redesigning the overflow pathway, we were able to eliminate the erosion problem without costly drainage infrastructure or regrading. Now, that water is being stored and reused to support the landscape's new plantings.

The City of San Diego's Rain Tank Voucher Program, developed by the City's Stormwater Department in partnership with CatchingH2O, is helping residents make rainwater harvesting more affordable and accessible. Through this grant-funded program, eligible residents can receive vouchers toward discounted rain tanks and begin building water resilience right at home.

It's exciting to see more San Diegans turning rainwater into a resource. Every installation helps create healthier landscapes, reduces stormwater runoff, and strengthens our community's resilience for the future.

At CatchingH2O, we typically encourage larger rain tanks because they provide more efficient, longer-term water storage and better overall performance. That said, rain barrels can still be a great way to start collecting rainwater — especially when they’re free.

One of our clients is upgrading from a barrel system to a larger rain tank and is generously giving away their existing setup to anyone interested in getting started with rainwater harvesting.

Available are 10 FREE 55-gallon drums, currently plumbed together as a system but removable individually if desired. The new owner will need to handle disassembly and pickup. The barrels are located in the La Mesa area.

If you’re interested, please email us at [email protected], put Free Rain Barrels in the subject line, and we’ll help connect you.

In a recent blog on , --"Why Is Your Water Bill So High? The Story Behind San Diego’s Rising Rates" -- Patrick McDonough and Courtney Brown explore the reasons behind the high cost of water as well as options and what we can do.

“San Diego residents pay some of the highest water rates in the nation. Even as conservation efforts have driven actual water use to historic lows, rates continue to climb. To the average ratepayer, that doesn’t quite add up. Isn’t saving water far cheaper than producing it? So what’s really driving these increases? The forces behind your water bill involve staggering debt, flawed planning, and an agency that may have spent billions on water infrastructure we never needed. Here’s what every San Diegan should know.”

The article closes with a powerful reminder: “Local, sustainable water supply is one of the most effective tools San Diego has to reduce its dependence on expensive imported water and stabilize rates over the long term."

We fully agree. This principle is at the heart of everything we do. It’s why we continue working alongside local government partners to support voucher and rebate programs, why we’re committed to educating the community on practical water-harvesting strategies, and why we’re focused on helping grow a resilient, locally driven water conservation movement across Southern California.

San Diego is often held up as a model of water resilience. So why do residents pay some of the highest water rates in the nation?

Even as conservation efforts have driven water use to historic lows, rates keep climbing. The forces behind your bill involve staggering debt, flawed planning, and an agency that may have spent billions on infrastructure we never needed.

Our staff attorneys just broke it all down, including what better alternatives look like and how you can make your voice heard.
