I was leaning against the fence, waiting for the tank to finish filling. Kissy came up and began rubbing her eye on my elbow.

This one is so sweet. She's either gonna be a breeze to break in, or she's gonna be a terror!

I started on the Great Stock Tank Exchange today. It started with delivering a clean tank to Trey, who was quite happy to have it. Then, I cleaned that tank and an extra up top. Replaced the older broodmares' tank. Took out the second tank in the young mare pen. Took it up and brought down a clean one.

This is more work than it sounds like.

Did a second test of power washing stock tanks. It's quite effective. I'll be going to the effort to do this at regular intervals to keep the horses' water clean.

Alas, this particular tank has a hole in the bottom and will not be going back into the rotation.

Anyone need a planter?

I got the Kubota running!

About a week ago, I got through morning feeding, reloaded, and the Kubota would not start.

*sigh*

With assistance, I towed it up to the carport.

It took a few days to get to it. In the meantime, I was using Beth's Ranger to feed. Which meant I was the only one who *could* feed. As Beth put it, using the Ranger requires "Valerie procedures" that no one else is crazy enough to try.

Over the last few days, I've been taking time to work on cleaning up the engine in preparation for starting work. I decided the best thing to do was start with a basic maintenance service, which includes a fuel filter.

I was already suspicious the issue was the fuel filter. I just needed to find it.

There was *so* much dirt and hay accumulated on and around the engine, transfer case, and hydraulics that I almost couldn't positively identify anything.

Today I was able to change out the fuel filter.

Of course, in the process, the pinch clip fell off the hose, and I played hell trying to put it back on the hose while diesel poured out of the tank.

It took a little doing; but I got the filter in.

I stepped into the driver's seat, sent up a prayer To Whom It May Concern, and turned the key.

Nothing.

I'd left the key in the "on" position and drained the battery.

Not to be discouraged, I got my truck and hooked up the jumper cables.

Once the battery had some charge, I tried again. This time, it tried to start, but it was having a hard time running. At this point I realized I'd lost most of the remaining fuel in the tank.

So. After a trip to get fuel, I came back at it, and she started! She runs! I even used her to feed!

I still need to do a lot of maintenance. Fluid exchanges and filters for everything remain to be done. But I got it going again.

I needed to fill the dogs' water tank today, and it was absolutely filthy. No amount of scrubbing actually cleans it (or the horses' stock tanks, for that matter).

I wish I'd taken a "before" picture. The power washer did a bang up job cleaning this thing!

Now I'll have to start cleaning the stock tanks this way, too. That'll be a bit more complicated, since I can't get the power washer to the lower pens.

Anyway, great thing to have figured out, especially since algae is a huge issue with the well water.

Also, I apparently need a new hose!

Yesterday I crawled under the house in search of whatever has been stinking up the place.

The crawl space is small enough that I am obliged to make forward motion on my elbows and toes.

I found nothing. There wasn't even an odor.

So, Mike and I (he from the outside) got the dryer vent hose hooked up appropriately and venting reasonably outside instead of under the house.

Then we hooked up the vent hose on the back of the dryer. Which involved a small step ladder to get me back out from behind the dryer.

I have a suspicion that the dead thing was removed by a dog. Ajax and Hector like to den under the house. I suspect Ajax both brought and removed whatever dead thing he'd found or made dead. There was certainly an odor when he hopped up in bed yesterday morning between 4:30 and 5!

I put the crawl space cover on and we blocked up the far side as well, to keep the dogs out.

This morning, the dogs harassed a skunk. The house now smells like skunk. It's raining. All the windows are open and fans are going to air the place out.

New day, new stink, I guess!

The mystery continues.

After much cleaning and searching, the smell had subsided without a source being identified. The dryer was reinstalled and put back in service.

It did not take long for the smell to return.

The best guess now is, it's under the house. In the dryer vent hose.

Tomorrow, I get to suit up and crawl around under the house.

It's time for another round of What Died In The House and Where The Hell Is It?

We've had a rabbit between the range and the cabinet. The rat in the bedroom closet. Now we have...

No idea.

It started with a musty smell in the bathroom. Opening the windows would disperse it. We thought it was the toilet. The bathroom has been cleaned floor to ceiling and wall to wall.

Now it's a definite Something Is Dead smell.

Keeping the bathroom fan on and windows open has been the only way to keep it at bay.

Co**se flies started congregating in the bathroom.

The odor started to be strong in the laundry corner, which shares a wall with the bathroom.

Clearing out the cabinets revealed nothing.

Pulling out the dryer and pulling off the service covers (and WTF with these service covers? I'm going to have to do some significant work here) revealed nothing.

Indeed, now I can't detect the odor at all.

So. The bathroom is shut up and the fan off. See if the odor manifests again.

In the meantime, clean up this horror show and start work on replacing the service covers!

Time for another load of hay! Got it all bucked and stacked yesterday. We're good for 3 weeks now.
