We are a philanthropically focused, small-batch, craft roaster in the business of making good coffee common.

Common Good Coffee Roasters was founded by childhood friends Patrick Neal and Ryan Beagley-Reiner in San Diego, ca in 2015. The inspiration came from the simple desire to see truly good coffee become more common and to make coffee that worked for the good of everyone involved. "We looked around us and saw that so many of the smaller, owner-operated cafes and restaurants were selling coffee severely lacking in flavor and uniqueness, and coffee that was almost always over-roasted. On top of that, few people knew where their coffee came from and how the producers were compensated… I had been roasting at home and researching the coffee supply chain and thought, we can do this, let’s get these people better coffee.” - Ryan

Every bag has a story. Sabino and Maria Jesus farm high in Jinotega, Nicaragua, where Sabino carries on the coffee work of his father, Don José. We buy their coffee through Gold Mountain Coffee Growers, a direct-trade partner that exports on the farmers' behalf, so families like theirs can sell without middlemen.

Why can a coffee taste like fruit tea? It comes down to altitude and processing. High-grown coffee in Jinotega, Nicaragua, ripens slowly, and washing removes the fruit early so the bean's clean, juicy character comes through. Our October feature shows exactly that.

Deep, round, sweet, and fruit-forward.

Ethiopia Shakiso Washed
Floral · Lemon · Black Tea
Clean, bright, delicate, and tea-like.

The natural coffee dries with the fruit intact, building sweetness and fruit intensity. The washed coffee has the fruit removed before fermentation and drying, allowing clarity and floral character to shine.

Other than this place being a little hard to find (it doesn't have a sign or address visible, and it's also called Brick and Laurel and can be used as a private event space) they roast a good bean here. The owner knows his stuff and is clearly passionate about coffee and the science behind the bean. We will definitely be back.
