Let me show you what it’s like to bartend on the road. This time I’m in Malaysia with the team at Back Door Bodega, trying several noodle dishes and one of the world’s stinkiest fruits.

Let me break it down here:

Asam Laksa — a dense, vinegary, fish-based noodle soup. Rich and a bit pungent, but delicious if you’re into seafood.

Hokkien Mee — my favorite of all the noodle dishes I had. Crispy pork, red chili broth, and delicious noodles made this a hit. Even if it’s hot out.

Durian — the world’s stinkiest fruit. Like a banana and an onion had a baby. Weird and sticky, but with a creamy, rich texture. You either love it or hate it. Wash it down with salt water and you’re good to go.

Char Kway Teow — Malaysia’s answer to pad thai? Maybe. I think it’s better. Much more well seasoned and bursting with flavor.

Malaysia is packed with flavor — and hey, I gotta stay well fed if I’m making your drinks behind the bar.

Cheers.

Society will taint the way you perceive the world before you get the chance to see it for yourself. Sometimes you just have to take the leap and pave your own journey to gain a fuller picture of this beautiful, complicated planet.

India is visceral and contradictory. It’s also vivid, colorful, and extraordinarily hospitable. It will leave you with an understanding like no other.

The ultimate hangover cure? Back in Mexico City to test the theory again.

No matter the hour, CDMX always delivers when it comes to food. This spot is Tacos León in Roma Norte — fresh corn tortillas pressed daily and some of the kind of food that immediately brings you back to life.

And the best part? Places like this are everywhere throughout the city. Small street spots serving dishes you’ll only truly find in Mexico. Let me put you onto some gorditas de asada and some spicy salsa to wake you right up from a long night out.

1 Cocktail. 3 Ingredients. A worthy rival to the Negroni.

The Boulevardier.

1.5 oz Rye Whiskey
1 oz Campari
1 oz Sweet Vermouth
Orange Peel Expression

Stir ingredients down over ice until properly chilled and strain into a coupe. Finish with an expressed orange peel over the top.

Rich, bittersweet, citrus-forward, and layered with warm spice from the rye. A perfect cocktail for slower evenings.
