🐾 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗕𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻!🫐

Around here, even the dogs get a little blueberry goodness!

I've been tinkering with our homemade dog treat recipe, trying to get the perfect little bite-sized training treat.

Sounds easy enough, right? 😂

Well, let's just say there's been some trial, error, and a whole lot of sticky dough involved.

But we're getting closer! Made with our farm-grown blueberries and a handful of simple ingredients, these little bites are a work in progress.

Now we just need to get the recipe perfected and the official taste testers to weigh in. 🐶

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗗𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗕𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗦 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗡? 🤯

Yep! Chickens have a very different definition of bath time!

Instead of water, they roll, wiggle, flap and kick dirt into their feathers.

Why? Because dust bathing helps remove excess oils, control parasites and keep their feathers in good condition.

Meanwhile, I'm over here trying to keep dirt OUT of the house, and my chickens are rolling around in it ON PURPOSE! 😂

Apparently, cleanliness is in the eye of the beholder. 🐔

𝑶𝒏𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓… 🍅😂

I was prepping tomatoes for the freezer when I looked at the pile and thought, I should roast some of these.

So I sent two pans full into the oven with onions and garlic, and now instead of ALL of them heading to the freezer, we’ll have fresh roasted tomato sauce for dinner this week.

This is pretty much how things go around here. Start one project, accidentally start another. 😂

But roasted garden tomatoes + onions + garlic (everything from our garden). I’m definitely not mad about this particular detour.

🍅 Some for the freezer.
🍅 Some for sauce.
🍅 And one more way to make this summer harvest last a little longer.

🍅 FUN FACT FRIDAY 🍅

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘁 𝗣𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻?

When the tomatoes are coming in faster than you have time to turn them into sauce, the freezer can be your best friend.

I’ve been cleaning, coring and freezing our tomatoes as they ripen. No marathon sauce-making session required. 🙌

And here’s the fun fact: freezing actually makes tomatoes easier to peel! Once frozen tomatoes begin to thaw, the skins loosen and usually slip right off.

So instead of trying to find time to process a few tomatoes every day, I’m building up my freezer stash.
Then, when I finally have a Saturday to devote to it…

🍅 Tomatoes out.
🍅 Skins off.
🍅 Giant pot on the stove.
🍅 Sauce-making day!

Because sometimes preserving the harvest doesn't mean doing everything today. Sometimes it just means keeping it from going bad until you actually have time to deal with it. 😂

🙏 The praying mantis: friend or foe in the garden?

I’m always happy when I spot a praying mantis around the farm. They’re impressive little hunters, and they'll happily make a meal out of insects such as flies, moths, grasshoppers and caterpillars. They’re ambush predators—they sit incredibly still, wait for dinner to wander close enough, and then grab it with those spiny front legs.

But here's the part I didn't know...

🐝 Praying mantises aren't picky!

They don't know which bugs we've labeled "good" or "bad." They'll eat garden pests, but they can also catch beneficial insects like bees and butterflies. So while they're part of the natural pest-control crew, experts don't consider them a particularly reliable way to control garden pests.

Around here, I think of them as another piece of the farm ecosystem—and a pretty darn cool one to find hiding among the plants.

Apparently Mother Nature doesn't divide everything neatly into employees and troublemakers. 😂

🥚 Why is there sometimes a little... farm... on a farm-fresh egg? 😏

Because our eggs are sold unwashed.

When a hen lays an egg, it has a natural protective coating called the bloom or cuticle. Washing removes that protective layer, so we leave ours intact and keep the eggs refrigerated for freshness.

Are they always picture-perfect? Nope.

Did they come directly from a chicken wandering around our pasture? Yep. 🐔

And we'll take that trade any day.
