Alright! So, this isn't a pretty picture. And honestly, I didn't even attempt to be a fancy photographer once the dish was ready for reasons like, a) I was hungry like crazy and b) this is one of the tastiest, spiciest dish with loads of aroma that elevated my hunger to the point where I wouldn't care if my celebrity crush - Idris Elba knocks on my door! 😜This dish is a treat to your gastronomical system!
Dish: Maach'er chotpoti. Fish (ideally bone less) cooked with assorted spices and herbs in one pot. Usually, spices are cooked separately in any stew or curry before the meat/fish/veggies are being added. But, for this special recipe, you just mix all the spices, fish and the star of the dish - Mustard oil..loads of it in one heavy bottom cookware and let it cook slowly. This is the dish that has passed on from generations in our family 😇
The name 'Chotpoti' came from two incidences. First of all it's very spicy and flavorful, which we Bengalis would call 'Chotpota' and secondly, it doesn't require continuous supervision and takes relatively less cooking time, meaning 'Chotpot' (fast). You can connect the dots 😎
Back in those days, our great-grandmothers, grandmothers and my mother is not exceptional of raising a big joint family single handedly and set priorities as per situations. That would say, they had to supervise things from 'Jire theke Hire', the literal translation would be supervising from tiny seeds to diamonds!! 😲 So, on some days, they would miss the lavish typical 5 course Bengali meals to some time efficient, one pot yet tasty meals to prioritize other jobs at home. Funny it is, that, no matter how reluctantly you prepare this dish, your Gastronomical, Vascular and Cerebral systems receives one of the best treats! 🥳
