We ended up with one rooster in this group of chickens. He’s been friendly and not too loud (though I don’t think he has fully found his voice yet). So, we’ll let him stick around and see how it goes!

Some things never change: full bellies and a mama who can’t get a moment to herself!

If you spot the silver marks on Lucille and Knuckles’ heads, that’s from being disbudded today. It’s a routine procedure done when goats are young to prevent their horns from growing. Thank you Aspen Valley Farm for the lesson!

They’re already back to their favorite activities- nursing, napping and playing!

We’ve been keeping a little secret 🤭 šŸšŸ¤

Mayzie’s twins arrived last Thursday—a doe named Lucille (left) and a buckling named Knuckles (right). We’re already obsessed.

This was our first time breeding one of our goats and Mayzie kidded unassisted! Everything with goats is a big learning curve and we are taking in all of the highs and lows as we go- Thursday was a pretty great day after the rough start to our week.

Think you can figure out which children’s series’ the names came from?

Our hearts are heavy today.

We lost our sweet Junie B today after a difficult week of illness. She was only one year old, and losing her feels especially hard.

We suspect meningeal worm, though we’re still waiting on necropsy results before we know for certain. Our vet has been excellent in helping us develop a treatment plan including consulting with us multiple times over the holiday weekend.

Junie B was such a special girl—full of personality, sweetness, and all the little quirks that make our goats so easy to love.

This part of hobby farm life is never easy, and today just hurts. She was my daughter’s best buddy and we brought her home last summer as her pet, so that makes it sting a bit more.

Rest easy, sweet girl. Thank you for all the fun you brought to this place while you were here šŸ¤

This sweet girl was going to come live here but due to some unforeseen things coming up at our farm, the timing just wouldn’t work out. Please reach out to Bluebird Acres Goat Farm if you are interested in her- she would be a wonderful addition!ā¤ļø

Memorial Day, but make it patriotic and floral šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø We are grateful for all of the service members that have given their lives to keep us safe.

On a personal note, we have had a rough several days over here. Please send thoughts/prayers/good vibes our way as we make some tough decisions for one of our goats today/tomorrow ā¤ļø

Honeybees checking out their feed šŸ‘€šŸ

Some friends had a large honeybee hive in one of their trees. With the warmer weather they were wanting to swarm.

We hung a swarm trap last Friday and the bees quickly moved in and got to work. Most of the wax shown here, with the exception if 2 frames used to lure the bees in, was built since Friday afternoon ( today is the following Wednesday)!

We grabbed the swarm trap today and put the bees in their new home. We will feed them and check for queen activity over the next several days!

Enjoying my coffee and this beautiful Michigan morning while Brannon removes our swarm trap.

Next up we will put the swarm in their new hive and add some feed!
