It’s been one year since Mom called me to say she had fallen and couldn’t get up after months of increased and unexplained pain. We had multiple doctor appointments already set up looking for answers. Less than a week later, she was admitted to the hospital with at least seven rib fractures and several spinal fractures. It then took another week to get a confirmed diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that none of us had ever heard of. We spent Derby Day and Mother’s Day in the hospital. I never left her side, our world turned upside down. The next several months were a whirlwind of non-stop doctor’s appointments, research, advocacy, second opinions and round the clock caregiving. Five months later, she was back living at home and caring for herself! We are still on this journey together, and I am so thankful that she is such a fighter and has faced this diagnosis with so much courage. The best part has been watching her grow in her faith and relationship with Jesus. Helping her through this process has inspired me to follow a purpose I have always felt, but never fully embraced before. I was able to see how my lifelong pursuit of health, wellness, and nutrition combined with my knowledge of the healthcare system helped me to advocate for her when she couldn’t, and as she continues to heal, helping her to advocate for herself. By combining many holistic practices with her conventional treatment, she gained her strength and independence back faster than anyone expected. Thank you God! One year later, I am wrapping up my Integrative Nutrition Health Coach certification and launching my practice. I am excited to be pursuing a goal to help others in their health journeys.
